95 SR5 in Arizona - Looking for Purchase Advice!
Hey Gang,
New to the forums. Posting this to get some input and advice. Found a '95 4runner 5-spd 3.0 V6 about 10 miles away from me. Appears to have only been owned in Arizona. Don't need a daily driver but want a clean slate that is good for weekend camping adventures and long trips. Will make mods soon to go play in the mud and dirt.
Private seller is asking $8000 obo. Here are the stats:
Second owner
Originally purchased in Tucson
180k 'highway' miles
New exhaust and cat
Wheels balanced
New battery
New Alt
New fan belts
Said check engine light has been coming on so his mechanic is doing complete "tune up" before he'll let me test drive it. This would be my 4th Toyota Truck or 4runner. I feel confident inspecting / test driving the car. I'll ask about the water pump, timing belt, inspect the fluids, CV boots, transfer cases, cat, etc. when I test drive it. Looks very clean in photos. (See attached from online ad. There are a few more I can post, if it helps in your response.)
If I offer $6000, is that too high in your opinion? '95 isn't the year I would prefer, but if it's as clean as it looks online and he's had it tuned up, I think it might be worth it.
Any input is appreciated. Looking forward to many more posts here!
Cheers!
Ben

The 3.0 gets a bad rap for very real reasons. Look up the head gasket issue. I just got into a 95 with the same engine and in hindsight should have looked around a little more. but I got mine cheap enough that if it ends up biting me in the ass it will be a nibble, not a huge chunk gone!

Here’s my babe, Bella
She won’t be this stock for much longer. We’ll get rid of that booty sag as well!

Hello Ben! I purchased my 4Runner for $3,000 with pretty much the same specs just a 1994. Two owners, new clutch and belts and 170k miles. The initial inspection came out super clean aside from the CV boots. This is my first runner so I am not quite sure if I received a crazy good deal or if in your scenario they are asking for too much.

Honestly, I find that a little pricey. I've seen some nice third gens for that price. IDK anyone else have better input?

I bought my California only 95 @ 185,000 miles for $5,500.... FIFTEEN YEARS AGO. Not sure what inflation turns that into but $8 seems high to me. A lot of people include sentimental value and/or perceived worth in the price. Check kelly blue book. Betcha it'll show like $2200
Edit: just checked and I NAILED it! At least for my zip code, 95 @ 185,000 (I don't know your mileage) in "good" condition with quite a few options was $2246 private party. Tread carefully.

Thank you all for your input. Blue Book here showed between $3000-$3500 and that is more than I would have paid for this one. 8 of the 12 photos online were of another T4R...not the one he showed me. And it had rust in the door frame along with a myriad of other problems. I told him to call me when he gets serious about the price. He's since updated the photos and dropped it to $7000. Good luck finding a buyer. My search continues....probably for a 3rd Gen.
Thanks, again!

Yep. “Patches”, has an automatic rear end from a ‘94, a power steering pump from a ‘95, front right fender from a ‘92 pickup and a front grill from a ‘91 4 cylinder, and so on and so on. She’s like an old quilt, made up of lots of different patches, but just as comfortable as anything new.

Whew, 8k is high.
I am the owner of a 92, which i have had for over 20 years.
I elected to rebuild mine at 358k. The infamous head gasket blew. Compression was down some what so i rebuilt the 3.0
What disappointed me about the second gen is there is nothing to bolster its performance. Nothing at all.
If i were you, despite my pride in my 2nd gen, for 8k, perhaps consider a 3rd gen. Lots can be done all around, from engine to suspension. It is a good platform to build on with pride.
