Question Timing chain replacement question

I think my timing chain is stretched and needs to be replaced. I'd like to know what else I should plan on replacing along with it, and what parts I need to buy. I would assume that in addition to the chain I'll need new guides, chain cover gasket and valve cover gasket, but is there anything else I should plan on while in there?

Thanks!

Anyone?

I'm looking at the full set from DOA racing with the metal chain guides, anyone have any experience with these, or anything else I can expect to want to work on while the cover's off?

I don't really know what else you might want to do while you are in there. I think going with the metal guides is a good idea. I have a DOA Racing engine and of course it came with their chain and guides installed. Engnbldr.com is another good source for parts as is LC Engineering. Of course you hear good and bad experiences with all suppliers.

Often times people will recommend replacing a water pump when doing a timing chain... Is that something I should look at?

Unfortunately I am not an expert on these engines so cannot say with absoute certainty. If it were me then I would probably replace the water pump. The oil pump also comes to mind but I don't think they tend to go bad like water pumps.

What I can advise, from everything that I have heard, is that you need to stay Toyota OEM with the water pump. Do not go with a local parts house brand.

Get the parts from engnbldr.com, it's hard to beat his prices and service.

Unless the H2O pump was replaced recently, do it. Oil pump maybe. Also a good time to replace belts and rad hoses, while it's all ready torn apart. Shouldn't need a new TC cover unless the old chain has worn a hole thru it.
