opinions on noises, please assist

test drove a 95 v6 today

please give me your opinions

acceleration was ok, only 150hp motor
handled ok, rode well etc
BUT
two things had me wondering and worrying
1 - there was a ticking noise coming from drivers side of engine bay. not a valve tick, but something moving with the motor. i didnt hear it the other night so i wonder if maybe something got up in there and is getting knocked around

2 - there is a noise coming from the passengers side of car by the firewall.
so here is what happens - give it some throttle and as the rpms fall you can hear a fluttering/gurgling sound, can hear air moving and somehting making a noise with that. not really a vaccuum leak or something like that, but maybe something to do with the EGR system?

having it looked at tomorrow.
hopefully the once over wont cost me anything and it will turn out ok.
we'll see.

didnt overheat, had it running for about 40minutes or so straigh, most of that was parked, and about 5 minutes with teh AC on full blast. I did whatever I could to make it run hot...didnt happen. Got up to a certain mark and just hung there, just under 1/2way. so thats good.

Noise Opinion

If something "got up in there" that would not be a good thing, let alone is not really that possible for something like that to happen, unless a valve dropped. If it is a knocking sound that you can clearly hear coming from the bottom end, I would beware of it as the pin that holds the piston onto the connecting rod has possible come lose, or is worn.

As for that gurgling sound, I have it happen very occasionally on my 92 4 runner, and I cannot figure out what it may be. Either way it does not seem to be affecting my performance.

I suppose it could be an egr valve opening and closing, but I dont really know.

If your engine is making a valve ticking sound from the top end, you can get your valve lash adjusted at Toyota for about 800$ (on my truck anyway) or you can do it yourself.

hope this helped

The ticking noise is the valves and/or the injector solenoid. Does it do it under acceleration only? Mine is the same way. 95 V-6 with 195000 miles.

The gurgling sound I've narrowed down to the Air Flow Meter. I've learned to live with it, as the replacement cost is north of $800.

why would the air flow meter make a gurgling noise? my guess is that the noise is air in the cooling system, particularly the heater core.

If you notice when you hear that sound is during start up or under acceleration. Hum sounds like water moving through something to me maybe a heater core !!!!!!!!

I know, Air Flow Meter and gurgling noise doesn't sound right, but that's what it is on mine. It's the gate and a weak spring inside that makes the noise. It's an odd noise for this, I know, but I've locked it down to that with a scope... maybe his noise is different or my description of the noise doesn't make sense.

Either way, my heater core is fine...
