Unhappy Cruise Control

Recently bought a 92 V6 Limited 4Runner (no owners manual in it).

When entering a freeway I engaged the cruise control and waited until reaching 110 Km/Hr (nearly 70 MPH) to press "set". At that time the cruise control light flashed a couple of times in the dashboard and then went off. Tried setting it on again and couldn't do so. Then tried turning the engine off and on, again pressed cruise control, and “set” and the same thing happened. Once again I turned the engine off and on and tried the same thing but now at 90 Km/Hr (around 56 MPH) and finally engaged the cruise control and gain speed by pressing the accel. button.

Haven’t been able to find an Owners Manual around so I would appreciate if someone could let me know if there is a speed limit for engaging cruise control and if so, what is such limit.

Does anyone have a copy of the Manual available?

Thanks.

OK to test the cruise control, you must try to set it again at 70mph, if it doesn't work, stop you car but do not turn off the engine. There is a check connector under the hood, you must connect terminals 3 and 11 of the check connector. (you will need a short piece of wire that is stripped on both ends) Then go inside and read the code off the cruise control light. It will flash a code.

Let me know what code it gives and i'll let you know what's wrong with your cruise control.

There can only be 6 codes, 11, 12, 21, 23, 31, 32.

Mike, thanks for the tip. Have been trying to set the cruise control at different speeds and (luckily?) had no trouble. Still trying setting it at all possible speed ranges.

WaynO, congrats on the purchase! It's a great rig with all the comfort available at that time. (Only thing I regret is not having ABS.)

Fortunately / regretfully, I had the same problem only onece after posting it in the site. What I can tell you is that both times I activated Cruise Control at a very low speed (i.e. 20 MPH) and tried setting it when I reached something like 70/75 MPH.

I just purchased a manual at e.bay and I’m waiting to receive it in order to find out if there is some kind of restriction for activating the system at low speeds. If you do have the manual, I would appreciate you let me know if it states something in this regard (mine will arrive in one more week).

Good luck.

Hi gang! I have a 92 V6 as well, although I still haven't tried the cruise control (hopefully mine will work without delay). I too am also looking to find an Owner's Manual. I think the local Toyota dealer might be able to special order me one, eh? Anyway just though I'd post, because finding two other '92 owners in the same thread seemed unusual. Hope you get your cruise figured out!

WaynO: just received my Manual. Checked on the Cruise Control section and there’s nothing stated about speeds limitations for turning the system on, i.e. pressing the CC button. Only restriction is for “setting” the desired speed, i.e. pressing the “set” button. (You’ll only be able to do so above 40 MPH). Will let you know if I find something else in this regard.

Absolutely!!!! I'm booking your IDs right now. Great to contact others with the same mod.

By the way, don't know if "Twilight Zone" or "Perth" somehow jeopardize my auto proclamation of "SOUTHERNMOST T4R.ORG MEMBER IN THE WORLD"????? (pls. see my signature) :too cool:

my 86runners cruise doesnt work either. i talked to marlin from marlin crawler and he told me that he had been diagnosing a cruise control problem and it ended up being a brake light. sounds weird but worth a try

I'm actually from Vacaville, about an hour South of Sacramento. I don't think I would consider that South California, but either way you've seen one part of CA not much else to see. I do plan to drive down to Pismo Beach one day... Maybe get a house near there. Speaking of Owner's Manual.... What gear does the auto tranny need to be in to engage 4WD High/4WD Low? :bonk:
In our Ford, its supposed to be Nuetral. Don't if its the same for a Toyota...

Yes, I received the pages, thankyou. I tried sending you a PM the other day to confirm that I'd seen them, but I guess the PM did not work. Sorry for the late reply.
