Fuel smell

Thank you folks

Ok i searched and found some stuff but not quite what I was looking for...

So, My vehicle is a 3.0 v6 and I just filled it today (bought the truck on empty)

I am noticing a very strong fuel smell. This gas smell is really quite strong...

I am wondering what things might cause this and or if it is a common problem.

I am leaning towards the thought that it might be a leak in the tank...

I am planning to let the it run till empty and check my milage then and see what t looks like.

Any help would be great

I assume it is a 95 just like mine. One place to always check fuel issues is the lines. There is one that runs under the passanger seat and it contains the fuel filter. Did you had to smog the car? In California you have to do a special smag test for cars 95 and older which also contains pressurizing the fuel tank to check for leaks. Mine passed that, so since they are mandating a test like that on older vehicles i would say you may have an issue on the tank.

yes it is a 95 ( i think that is in my sig) i am in NY so i don't think he pressurized the fuel tank but i am not sure TBH...

is it odd that the vehicle was sold to me on empty?
WHere is a good place to buy a tank ?

AND THAMK YOU

Well the best place to buy a tank is your Toyota stealership. However due to cash issues related with Toyota ( or any car dealer) and their parts department I would suggest an auto parts wholesaler. Now these guys are not that easy to find and usually located near auto dismantlers or major body shop areas. There are a couple in California but i dont know about New York. Most of the parts are ordered and they are NOT OEM, but i am sure for a 1995, it is not going to be a big deal. To put the cost difference in perspective a front bumper from one of these auto parts wholesalers is $52 ( Chromed 1995 4runner), I am not sure ho much is it from the dealer but guaranteed to be in the 3 digits.

It is kind suspicious that the vehcile is sold on empty, more than likely the previous owner of the truck ( the lying crook who would rather do a quick sale than be honest) knew about the fuel smell problem. Unless your tank is leaking like crazy I don't expect it to be a huge repair bill.

Well anything except getting a new tank should be less than $100 if you do most or all the work yourself. I consider crazy $500 or more.

I wouldnt sweat the empty tank too much...some people are just cheap or it has been sitting for a bit, the fuel smell is very common from what I can tell, mine also has this problem, Im gonna say that it is probably the charcoal filter canister, Im gonna pull mine out today and see about cleaning it...Ill let u guys know how it goes in a few days, here are some things to check : 1 rust holes in wheel wells if u have em exhaust is comin in the cab dere... 2 if u have a leaking clutch master cylinder this also causes a foul odor, when i replaced mine it definitely cleared up a bit 3 fuel filter for obvious reasons 4 charcoal canister...this is all i can think of right now ill get back to you guys with the results...

also I would consider anything over $200 crazy keep in mind the engine we are working on is the notorious 3vze its a gas guzzler has little to no power and is not the most reliable or easy engine to work on...consider this, how long can you see yourself owning the truck? and make decisions based on that, Im not trying to bad talk the 3vz mine has 402,000kms but Ive seen so many "parts trucks" for sale with tons of new parts installed, try not to make the mistake of spending too much money on it and then blowing the HG if you blow your HG and you cant get the recall you might as well get a new engine like the 22re or the 5vz which is a 3.4l v6 way more power more torque less fuel consumption more reliability Im trying to spend as little as possible so I can afford the better engine in what will no doubt be the near future...

Well i have to agree on the gas guzzling no power statement. I thought it was only mine.
I was thinking how in the earth someone can off-road this car, it feels like it barely moves its own chassis on flat asphalt.

Well it depends on your expectations. I paid $800 for mine, just so i can have some sort of 4 wheeled transportation. Gas mileage was second. Cool looks, power etc.. was not even in the deal. So I am ok with my rig.
