I've seen folks with ammo cans bolted in there.

there was a thread on YT that talked about installing/replacing an aftermarket lock in the 1st gen 4runner's glove box.

i bought one!

i'll see if i can find the thread and post it here.

**** here's the thread ****

http://www.yotatech.com/f116/those-w...st-gen-144192/

i remember emailing the company and was asked if i was a reseller.

i said that someone posted that they purchased 1 lock and installed it.

... they said okay and sent me the lock

Any solutions to adding something in that keeps the original look?

Center Console / Securing

i am definitely going to look into getting a removable wheel set-up though.
An Army Surplus Ammo Box modified so that it is lockable fits well between the front seats. I was able to use the original mounting brackets so no drilling into the body.

Had an attempt made to steal my 87 this morning. Came out of my house to find the ignition on, my steering wheel sliced though, and my club laying on the passenger seat still locked.

After they successfully stole the truck 5 years ago, (Thank you Portland Police for getting it back!) I installed a hidden kill switch that grounds out the coil and that appears to have saved the day!

All in all, I'm out a steering wheel, center console with my GPS in it was untouched and I don't keep anything else in the truck of value. I think I will replace it with a quick release wheel.

I am curious if anyone has tried modifying the glove box locking mechanism that they put in some of the 90's 4 runners / pickups to fit in an 80's 4 runner?

IMO/IME, all factory glove box/center console locks I have used are essentially useless in situations where you are dealing with break-ins. A pry bar or even a screw driver would make short work of it. Personally, I think they are only useful in keeping out the opportunistic thief and/or nosy people (e.g. valet, dealership porter, car wash attendant, mechanics, etc.). ....those situations where someone might rummage through or steal something from your glove box/console but wouldn't want to cause damage making it obvious.

IMO, a securely mounted lock box is likely your best bet to truly help keep valuables protected.
