86 starts and dies
I have replaced: mass air flow, ignition module, upgraded coolant temp switch(Toyota bulletin), I did wiring harness repairs, Fixed a broken intake boot, fixed all grounds, rechecked all my wiring work, new circuit open relay, new injector connectors, TPS adjusted to spec, fuel pump, strainer, fuel filter(plugged up somethin' awful). compression is 170-186psi for all four. plugs are wearing well and I get 25mpg before this happened. new wires, cap, rotor, plugs(all ignition parts about 5 months ago), no codes, CEL is on when key on/cranking/running, once running it goes out. umm,....... oh, I inspected the inside of the ECM and looks good/clean/no cracks or water damage or stains. I just finished removing and cleaning the battery/block main ground cables and reinstalled. fuseable link is good, I am about to sell it.... Toyota dealer doesn't have a organized system for the old manuals and of course they don't have them anymore. I NEED a correct manual for my broke buddy and component locations.... or just some help. I will be by the computer for another 45min or so. the truck broke down at a friends house also... damit

dang. Sounds like youve thrown an auto zone at that toyota. Why not throw a ECM at it?
Are you buying new parts or salvage?
Is your battery good and have a full charge (so it will run the starter AND the ECM?
Have you checked for AIR FUEL FIRE?

actually I have gone to Toyota for the parts. I love my lil' buddie. All this has happened over the last few months. I have a awsome gel cell battery. I have everything because it runs!?... I have checked all of it though and it is honestly hard to get correct information on this truck, wiring is different than the books. I have a friend who's got an ecm to try, I'm gonna get it tomorrow. I just found the fuel pressure spec(45psi)... thats word of mouth though.... I have removed the regulator and it looks clean but I can blow through it???... I have been a master guild tech for Audi since 1996.... and this is beatin my brains in cause I can't get the correct info! so it's like everything i do is "off the hip". and of course we all know that's a recipe for excessive time and mistakes... but it is some big mystery here in Alabama... all my off road friends have gutted and done motor swaps in their yota's so none of them know squat when it comes to stock... go figure. anyway, if the 45psi sounds right, someone please let me know. I have a little time tomorrow after work and im gonna test fuel pressure and the ecm... well see what happens. umm, ..... yeah... this is almost like the end of your favorite dog(old yellar)... gonna have to put'em down if he don't get better. I am open for any conversation, input, do's, dont's, all the above. feel free to call after 530 tomorrow central time. 2052812193... sorry if i replied incorrectly, I am new to this whole forum thing.

Can't help with your truck, but a Factory Service Manual should have your fuel pressure spec.
Good luck!

i don't want to give up on it. I like the 4cyl. It is so useful and easy to drive. I need the cheap type of transportation with a big bucket in the back for all my crap. I have to say again I love it. It is just going to take some time, but I can say this!, when it IS running, it will run grrrrreat! ... but probably have to rebuild or at least do a major service on my RZ i've been riding ery day. spent an 1 1/2 driving during lunch to borrow a free ecm and got here to the 4runner and the plugs are different.... jeeze.

Always think it will never happen to you....the top thin layer is gas, the rest is water and debris.

just my usual routine, nothing out of the ordinary. I get gas at a few different stations, I usually lean towards one because they have no ethanol in their fuel... I didn't this last time. I am guessing I filled up just after the filling truck left the station...When the truck hooks up and the fuel is poured into the tank in the ground it stirs up what liquid and debris is left in the bottom. Some may or may not know, but water is heavier than gasoline. When condensation occurs, water is formed inside the tank and sinks to the bottom, when you fill up just after the filling station truck has replenished the tanks in the ground you have a good chance of getting dirty fuel as well as water contamination because of the activity of pouring into the tank. Gasoline with/up to 10% ethanol has a higher chance of pumping water because ethanol is like brake fluid, in a sense that it absorbs water. This is also why gasoline with ethanol doesn't have as long a shelf life, because it will absorb water(about two weeks and I throw it out or burn it) and of course....cause problems. For what ever reason(women, work, etc.) it slipped my mind. I thought about it being the cause when I removed the fuel pump, but looking straight down into the fuel tank(perpendicular to the liquid)it is hard to notice seperation. I found my fuel gauges today and performed a fuel pressure test, when releasing the pressure from the gauge I noticed dirty fuel spray out. I questioned this because the day before I ran the fuel pump with the fuel rail open at the regulator end to blow out any debris and move some fuel through it and in the first 1/2 cup or so the dirty colored fuel became clear and clean, so I "assumed" it was just some **** in the 280,000mile fuel rail blowing out. Well it became a pattern to focus on when I saw it flow out of the fuel gauge while releasing pressure... hence the reason for the coffee can and the picture! So with the fuel system drained now, I will replace the filter and strainer again and fill er' up. The next post should be happy trucks and owners.

Yes, always to look over everything. remember the older vehicle's had a service interval of 15k miles for fuel filter changes.... but that was 15 ott years ago! gotta go with the times and realize the fuel we have now-a-days is different(ethanol) and the gas stations that were built 15-20 years ago are starting to show age in their equipment... they may look new above ground but below ground they may be skimping on maintenance costs or replacement of 20 year old tanks.... hence the reminder of fuel system inspection.... happy motoring all
