1st gear wont engage in 95 auto 4x4

first off i'd like to thank all the contributing members of this site. i got my runner as a project car 3 months ago and found solutions to almost every problem i've encountered by searching this site. really it's been a huge help.

so my question now is slippage. i recently drove to santa barbera from az and the whole time my tranny ran great, took off fine from stops and no issues what so ever. then when i exited the freeway i noticed that it was slipping in first gear. i figured it may be hot and the viscosity of the ATF was thin and causing it to slip so i parked it for three hours and let it sit. then when i started it up the problem was almost gone until it got warmed up then it started slipping again. checked the fluid, dark red but at the proper level and not burnt smelling.

next day went to leave and could not get it to come out of 4 low...?.. i hadnt put it in 4 low in two weeks. i drove around the block moving the shifter from high4 to low 4 to 2high.. no results. i gunned it out of frustration and brought it to 5500 rpm. then SHIFT 4high and a second later i felt the front wheels disengage and drop into 2high... then minus a little minor slippage in first it ran great and shifted normal and persice.

next day i drained the trannny and dropped the pan. fluid was nasty looking but not burnt. filter mildly clogged but not to packed. i had the car on an incline so i was able to get 7 quarts of ATF out. i replaced the filter and refilled with 6 quarts of dexmerc and 1 quart of trans-x tune. drove it around and shifting in all gears seems nice and solid but it still slips off the line from a stop... any suggestions? my tranny has 195k on it so its about due for a replace or rebuild. i did recently adjust my trans throttle position cable, it was about 3/4" out of adjustment. maybe put it back? the motor was replaced with a JDM about 30k ago, maybe they have diff spec?

i plan on rebuilding the tranny myself so hopefully i know what specifically to replace or look for (i figure if make it worse i'll just buy a new one) (cant break whats already broken right)

any help is appreciated and once again thanks for all the help with other issues.
