Mercedes Benz 300 Turbo Diesel conversion

What do you guys think about doing the OM617 swap? 5 cyl. 125Hp 181Tq with turbo
Should see 28 to 35 MPG and from what I understand these engines are as rock solid as can be.

I'm not sure all that will have to be done to do the swap but I bet it would be fun and not to crazy challenging......I hope

I always thought the TDI swap would be cool, this would be at a slightly higher level though.

The conversion has been done a few times into Toyota and from what I understand it's not the hard to do.
I just bought a 1982 Benz 300 Turbo Diesel car with 162K on the clock, the car runs great!!

I am still on the fence....I want the added power and the better fuel mileage but I also don’t want to take away from the value and originality of my rig.
If I do the swap it will be the engine only I will keep everything else Toyota in my 4Runner. I will be sure to do the conversion justice by making it look bone stock, like the truck came with a Mercedes diesel engine from the factory. I may have to use the Benz power steering pump and A/C compressor not sure if I will need anything else. I may also improve the turbo efficiency by adding an intercooler.

Hey guys here is the engine shots

I think I'm going to fix up the Benz as a driver then tag it for a month or two. I want to drive the car with diesel power to see how I like the performance and drivability. I should get a good idea of the fuel economy as well since the car weight and 4Runner weight is near the same.

Wow, if the exhaust and intake were swapped it would be configured just like a 22r huh?

I'm going to keep the 5speed trans that is in the truck and use an adaptor plate to mate the Benz engine.
The exhaust is also not that hard to run even though it is not on the same side as the 22re.

have you found a place that makes the bell housing plate?
If not that can be a costly little item.

Yeah, those are usually really pricey. I saw a guy on youtube making a trans adapter plate out of 1/2" to 3/4" aluminum for an electric motor (electric car) with a cardboard template and a jigsaw!

We are a machine shop so the plate and pilot bushing is a none issue. The coolant system maybe a bit hard because of the added langth of the Benz engine.
