Difference between 88-89?

I keep looking on ebay for odd and end parts, but everything is listed 84-88 or 85- 88. I think all my parts are the same on my 89. If I remember correctly just the truck changed in 89. Am I right?

you're talking about a 4runner right? there were no real differences between the 88 and 89 runners. in 89 the pickups changed to the new design, but they didn't get the 4runner switched over yet. from what i remember reading, the 89 4runner was exactly the same as the 88, and they only made it for about a half year or so until they had all the tooling done for the 90 4runner. then they started making the 90 early.

so long story short, any 88 parts should fit your 89. anything from 86-89 should fit and most things from 84-85 should fit.

Bringing this back from the dead. This is bad info. There are quite a few changes from the 1988 to 1989 4runner. I'll start with one I've experience. The front swaybar is bigger on the 1989 vs 1988. The 1989 was also rated at 5hp more (150 vs 145).

If anyone has a comprehensive list if 1st gen year by year changes I'd love to see it.

I have an 88 and 89 1st Gen both Automatics however the plugs on 1 ECU is gray while the other ECU is yellow. I cannot read the label on the 88 ECU though.

Fuel Injectors are quite different

It's been 2 years since I did that job on my 88, but iirc they were 14 ohm injectors and then from 89-95 they were lower, but I do not remember the numbers (could be the exact opposite, just know they ARE different!). It was a difficult search to find the correct ones for my 88 and ended up having to run pigtails to plug into my factory harness.

ETA- new 89+ had the block mounted oil cooler as well, the first gen in 88 did not (at least not on mine anyways)
