Angry Power steering issue

my 93 is burning power steering fluid through the engine. Is currently going through 2 quarts a day and getting worse. Not leaking anywhere else. I didnt even know it was possible for it to get sucked into the engine! any ideas and/or advice? Thanks guys!

That's an easy one
The Toyota PPS (progressive power steering) uses engine vacuum to increase the idle when the steering is strained, such as at full lock.
The is a vacuum switch mounted on the PS pump, with 2 vac hoses going to it. The diaphragm in the vac switch that separates the engine vacuum from the PS fluid has ruptured so the engine vacuum is sucking up the fluid and burning it. Replace the vac switch or just disconnect the vac hoses and plug them temporarily.

Seems like u have a good handle on this power steering vacuum switch. Do u have a part number or an exploded diagram site? I have some Toyota manuals for my 2f, are the same available for the 3.0?

Stats: 92 3.0 with ps leak and possible bad vac switch

could both vac hoses be permanently discconected and plugged , which would totally eliminate any future leaks/problems , while still alowing the power steering to work ?

Now when your steering is strained your truck will die, you need that vac hooked up. However it's a toyota part and the are $115 new.

Called toyota today and the terd in the part dept told me that was an invalid number, refused to research the part number, then hung up on me.

Considering earlier models don't even have PPS, yes.
Plug both hoses and both ports on the switch.
The PS may load the engine down a bit at full lock, but it doesn't stall out the engine.

1st Gen
1988 4Runner SR5 4x4
3.0L V6, 5-speed

Today we were going to change my power steering fluid but realized that I have a leak from what my friend/mechanic believes to be that vacuum switch on the pump.

I went to an auto parts store and they had nothing like that in their records.

Am I going to be stuck going to the stealership for this vacuum switch?

Go to yotatech.com. There are a lot of guys parting out their 1st gen runners and trucks. You can find this vacuum port for probably $10-$15 shipped.
