I would just rebuild the engine, if you really wanna do a swap go all out, do a 4BT cummins, a VW 1.9l TDI, or a chevy 350 V8, don't waste your time with something that will make a minor difference.

My '89 1st Gen 'Runner has the 3.Slow and low compression. I'm trying to decide if I'm going to rebuild it or do a budget swap (Toyota only). The 3.4 swap looks too expensive and a PITA. I'm about to grab a complete, drivable, rust free, '86 2wd Pick-Up with a good 2.4RE for 500 bucks anyway and could drive it awhile before yanking the motor and parting the rest out. (They're both Automatics, so maybe not even have to swap flywheel?) OR, I know of a complete (with ECU/exhaust/harness/etc) low mile junkyard 22RT TURBO for $550. Any opinions on which route to go ? Thanks in advance ya'll !

Man, really bringing a thread back from the dead.

I would probably just buy the 2WD truck for the motor and have spare parts for your vehicle.

22RTE does not really make that much more power and parts are much more difficult to find or more expensive.

I think the 3.4 swap would be the best option if you have the money and time.

Thanks for the input CCuniningham. I bought the 22RE 2wd truck yesterday. It might be too nice to part out. I could use it for a partsrunner as is, or clean it up a bit, fix a few trim items and probably sell it for 2 grand in my town. To further complicate my decision, (or make it easier?) they also had a rolled T-100 with a 3.0 I could get for a hundred bucks, yank the motor, and make a profit on parts and scrap metal. So now its 22re or 3vzre ?

Engine swap

To replace the 3.0 with the newer 3.4 5ve-fe is a relatively easy swap with 40 more horsepower and newer motor

Yea the more and more I dig I keep seeing 22re as the better options. But there are a few cultists that love the 3.0. I donít mind mine but Iíd rather have the 4 cylinder.

I think the moral of the story is if you have the 22re, keep the 22re, if you have the 3vze, either keep and restore it or replace with the 3.4L or better rather than the 22re.
