Mine broke off at the mast but was reeled all the why inside. No way to get to it but to take the cover off the motor and take it out. Nevertheless, if you are able to get it out with just pliers than be sure what you pull out is equal in length to the new one. Just to be sure nothing is actually left inside the motor.

Well, this article is about a 2nd gen antenna, but it looks just like my 1st gen, which needs a new mast.
So p/n's for both (if they're not the same ) would b enice.

Thanks for all of the great info. I have a 98 and to have it fixed and or to get the part from the dealer was to cost a arm and a leg and maybe more. thanks again.

WOW!

I just bought the part to do the very same thing this weekend! and voila, here is a post w/ pics! Man I love this site.
The parts dude at the Stealer said the same as 'yooperbikemike' and 'doc76239', to change it from up top and not worry about pulling out the moter.
My two cents worth, still, thanks a bunch Mike, this way I'll know how to do it both ways!

Antenna fix

By some chance to you know the part number of the antenna? I think that on my 98 it just needs to be rethreaded and should just suck back in.

Just an FYI..

This fix is different on a 1st Generation power antenna. If the mast is broke/bent you must remove the motor and disassemble.

This is because the mast cord is held in place by a friction clip inside the motor housing. Pull all you want on the mast while someone pushes the antenna up button and it ain't gonna come out.

Just wanted to chime in as I was given bad information and could never figure out why my antenna would never come out as described.

I replaced the mast as described here:

If I remember right you need to look at the back. There should be some sort of clip holding it in place.
