Question Rear end CLUNK!

Hi guys, my 88 3.0 has started making a "clunking" noise when putting it in reverse from P. It also makes a clunking noise if I brake hard and come to a full stop. Sometimes it does not do this when braking to a stop but will do it as soon as I take my foot off the brake and start rolling forward.

Any suggestions? I am thinking u-joint but want to hear what others have to say. If it is the u-joint, can you explain the process to change this?

thanks

Mark

put the parking brake on. put in neutral. go underneath the truck and try to twist the drive shaft both direction. You will see if there is play on those "U" joints.

It does sound like a u-joint problem, typically the lower one (differential end).
As for how-to, Search a bit and you should be able to find plenty of info.
