Question found a 4Runner! what to look for

I think I found a 4Runner that meets my needs. 4WD, V6 and reasonable price. This is my first hobby vehicle. I'm pretty stoked!

Specs:
1995, 4WD V-6
197K miles
decent condition
needs some work
- power steering pump (the current owners been using power steering stop leak, i hope he's been using lucas)
some power window issues (relay switch, i suspect)
$2500

I'm going to test drive on Tuesday. The current owner mentioned it's a little doggish (my summarization of his description) off the line. Takes a bit to get to 60-70 mph. It is 4WD with larger tires than factory specs.

4WD works, but he indicated he didn't use it. So, that's a test. Not sure if this model has locking hubs. I'll look. Hope it does.

Anyway -- i'm wondering what to look for and what questions I should ask.

Many thanks in advance!!!

Another question:
Does the 1995 4wd have a timing chain or a timing belt? I guess I could look it up...

I'll ask about transmission service, maintenance.

thanks again. just wondering what major things to look for. belts, hoses.

They have timing belts. I would change ALL fluids. Then call a dealership and have them check the VIN against 2 big recalls/service campaigns: Headgasket (if early 95) and steering center link. I just bought a 95 and when they did the steering recall I got a free alignment and inner tie-rods.

Enjoy your new toy!

For me, its always worth it to have a good mechanic check it out. And, most important test for me is a compression test, gives you an indication of the health of the motor.

Depending on your location, frame rust could be a problem.
The lack of power (doggish) could be due to larger tires, a clogged cat conv, worn engine, etc.

Check the fluids while you are looking at it. I passed on a 91 that I looked at because of the black (scary) trans fluid. Climb underneath too and look for leaks anywhere, main seal, diffs, etc. Also check all power items. Made that mistake with my 94. I liked everything else about it and just forgot about little things like washer fluid pumps and all windows working. Cost me quite a bit to fix later and lots of frustration.
