86 5speed/85 5speed swap?

Fellas, will a 5 speed and transfercase from a 86 work in a 85' ?
I found one in a recking yard and am considering it for a spare.

If one is from a 22R engine and the other is from a 22RE engine, you would have to swap the trans and t-case as a set.

If both engines are the same, the t-case or trans could be swapped separately.

I was concerned that the straight axle drive shaft on the 85' would not work on the 86' transfer case . My 85 has just developed a knocking sound in rev coming from the trans. it is not loud or binding but noticable. The vehicle i am getting parts from had a bad motor so I am hopping the trans mission is ok.
thanks for all of the input.

The difference in the trans/t-case depends on the engine, not the front axle.
But you do have a point about the bolt pattern of the drive shaft flanges.
IIRC the pattern changed from the 83 to 84 model years.
