Most have been on forums so the idea is not new, But your point is well taken. learning the tone is an important thing, also searching YOUR problem or question you may find a thread or answer that can be expanded on rather than starting from scratch.
But some would rather jump into the new members thread and hit it 20 times to get the number. Or another favorite..... Dig up a 5 year old thread and comment. (Guilty, Because I didn't look) just to find out the OP has not logged on in three years...
Most do it to thwart spammers or bots from joining.
