Lexus version of the 4Runner

Just noticed today that the Lexus version of the 4Runner has a very strange tail gate. It does not open up and out of the way, it opens from left to right. When you're parked at the curb, it actually blocks access from the curb side of the vehicle. You'd think if you spend a few thousand extra for a fancy 4Runner that they could make a left hand drive version tail gate. Am I being picky to think this is a half baked tail gate?

I assume you're talking about the Lexus GX470... in which case it's not really a Lexus version of the 4runner but a totally different model based on the European Toyota Prado, from what I gather.

But you're right about the back "door". Kinda lame. You'd have thought they'd reengineering it for left-hand-drive cars.

I'd never would get any SUV that has a barn door, i.e. RAV4, GX470, CR-V, etc.

I guess their budget was not enough to change it for left hand drive, beyond the steering wheel. I remember some British cars that did not convert the windshield wipers.

It is one of those things that you either hate or love. I don't like that design, but it is easier to close than the standard SUV liftgate. You don't have to raise your arms or bend to close the liftgame. If somebody has a hard time raising their arms or a bad back, it could be useful.

I would have preferred a power liftgate on the GX I am really not a fan of the barn door style...

If the barn door opened the other way it would be a lot better.

Does the rear window on the Lexus GX470 go up and down like the 4Runner?

at first when i bought my gx i was disapointed too by the tailgate but then i was glad that it was "barn" style because my gx barely fit in my garage. I wouldn't have any room to lift the tailgate if it was like 4runner's tailgate

Unfortunately no - to me this is the only drawback to the GX. I could live with a barn door design as long as the hatch glass either pops up like on my old CR-V or rolls down like on the 4Runner.
