Red McCombs Toyota - San Antonio, TX

Well ladies and gentlemen, I have put off writing this story because I was hoping things would change and it would work out. Well here it is.
I have waited for this rig for over a month and it was by luck that it was even an opportunity to come to me. A friend had a connection at the dealership and he slid my name on the truck at the the last minute.
Well last Thursday I was informed that the Cement 4Runner was in and was already in make ready for me to pick up at the end of the day. So I picked up my family after work and we went. It was sitting there beautiful as can be. we test drove it around the area and came back.
Now I should have followed through with my previous plan to get a pre-approval from one of the banks in the area but the salesman told me he could get it done no matter what. I waited for what seemed like forever and asked multiple times if I needed to leave some money down so they would not sell it because it looked like no deal was going to get done that night. I was told no, they would not sell it and they would wait for me.
So I spent this last weekend feverishly getting a deal together and getting a yes which I got. Excitedly I called over only to hear that they sold the car early Friday morning and there was nothing I could do about it.

So many 4 letter words. but I remained calm as I could. apparently the manager I was dealing with took the day off and while the keys were in his desk someone decided to take them out of there and sell the vehicle.
I have spent the better part of the last 3 days talking to everyone from the New Car Sales Director and a dealer rep for the Red McCombs dealership and this morning their best response was that the best they could do was take 1k off on a White 4Runner coming in the end of August.
So I wanted to ask here if anyone knew something or anything I could do?

I realize this is the business of new car sales and this is how things work and I have been told by everyone in the dealership that while this doesn't happen often it can happen and its not illegal or against any written rules.
So, I am not sure what my next move and I know from an exhaustive search that finding another Cement will be close to impossible.
Thanks for the great reading material and I hope you enjoy your rides!

sorry to hear about this, but not surprised it happened at McCombs. Unfortunately, I don't believe there's a lot you can do without spending a ton of time and money for a slim chance at some resolution.

Find another dealer. If they played this game, your wait until August would be futile too. If you can't trust them, punt em. What a sleazy thing to do.

Fred Anderson in Raleigh has one. Spend $200-300, fly out and drive home. They are a good dealer.

When I was taking bids for my SR5 premium, McCombs sent me a bid on an SR5. When I pointed out it had cloth seats, they argued with me.

When I was asking about a Trail Premium the dealer in Round Rock did something similar. When I emailed them back about their over site the salesman said he was just trying to sell what was on the lot. Needless to say they did not get anymore of my attention.
Some dealers in Austin did not answer my question correctly about added options. We know that plenty of Toyota goodies are installed for some dealers.

Red McCombs

Sorry about your TRD Pro. I went there this past fall looking for a Trail Premium. The sales clerk was completely oblivious and just tried to convince me to buy a 2WD SR5 until I demanded to speak with a manager. The sales manager didn't even try to search his inventory or reach out somewhere else. I ended up finding one later that night at North Park and drove away with a TEP that very same evening. A week later I got a follow up call from McCombs and told them how lazy their manager was and how they lost a deal.
Never gonna set foot in that dealership again. Best of look on your search.

Red McCombs also owns Universal Toyota, also in San Antonio.

It's getting hard to find dealers to compete with each other.

In some large cities, Auto Nation owns all or most all of the dealers for all brands.

My experiences with Red McCombs have been hit or miss... but what kinda keeps me away is because...

I will never deal with Universal ever again. Back in 2008 I wanted to buy a Scion tC but one of the special edition Release series ones. I had went in we negotiated a deal, I was set to get about $12500 for my trade. Got all the info in writing and asked to go home to think about it. Went back the next day, decided I'd rather get one in black and in a manual transmission, they said sure no problem. when they came back with a new deal, they were only offering me $9700 for my trade and then when i told the guy hey yesterday you guys offered $12500 he told me, no we would've never offered that. Then I pulled out the paper and he proceeded to place the blame on a different sales manager. I left the paper there, and walked out. As I got to my car, the salesman came running out and said his manager would do the $12500, I declined, thanked him for his time and left. Drove over to Alamo Toyota and got a deal done that day, with a $13k trade offer lol. I haven't been to Alamo in the past 10 years and the people I dealt with are no longer there, but I have always had a positive experience with Cavender and North Park Toyota. My family has bought multiple cars from them, I've bought cars from them and my 2019 is on order from Cavender.
