Larry Miller Toyota Albuquerque, NM

I feel like I should provide my experience to future buyers.

I had been searching across the US to try and find a nautical blue 4runner TRD ORP with KDSS. I was being particular about the SUV as I have been saving for over a year to buy cash. I finally found one that was scheduled to arrive to Larry Miller Toyota in New Mexico so I worked with them to get the vehicle. I lived out of state.

My initial experience with Larry Miller Toyota was very good. My salesperson was very helpful and kept in contact with me. I appreciated his efforts while making this deal. I placed a hefty deposit down on a new vehicle (2021 4runner TRD ORP) and was told of an estimated time of arrival. I was from out of state so I made some work schedule arrangements to pick up the vehicle at that time. I understood that the vehicle could certainly arrive at another date but had some reassurance that the date was usually pretty close. There were a few additions (badging, valances to match, tires) I wanted to make to the vehicle and inquired as to whether the dealership could do this. I was pleasantly surprised that they were. I thought everything was going great until the last week before the vehicle's scheduled arrival.

I was informed that the vehicle was arriving about a week early from overseas. I thought this would be a good thing. However, I was informed that I HAD to get the vehicle within a few days of its arrival or they WOULD NOT sell the vehicle to me DESPITE having the $1000 deposit down for weeks. There was no way that I could get time off work, rearrange an entire schedule etc to go to get the vehicle with that short of notice. They were telling me this even before the vehicle had even arrived on the lot. What's worse, is that at the same time I had another dealership call me to tell me they had since obtained the same vehicle much closer to home but because the Larry Miller salesperson had helped me and built the relationship with me I declined that vehicle even though it was 10hrs closer to home and I wanted to be fair to the salesperson.

Even worse than that, is that they tried to KEEP my $1000 despite being the ones who essentially bailed on the deal! They put me in an untenable situation and tried to keep my money as well. Fortunately, I was eventually able to secure a refund (either from my bank or the dealer or the bank contacted the dealer - I don't know). Chase was very helpful with this complaint.

This was a very disappointing turn of events. I was excited to get the new vehicle. I am just glad i had not bought my plane ticket at the time.

I would HIGHLY caution anyone from buying a vehicle in a similar situation. I would also HIGHLY recommend that all the details regarding any deposit are VERY CLEARLY STATED and in written form. They were not on mine.

Good luck out there.

i'm originally from california and moved to new mexico 17 years ago. over that time i've had a lot of work done on my home and all i can say is this is a really big buyer beware kind of place. get everything in writing!! verbal understandings here dont mean a lot.

by the way i drove by that toyota dealer yesterday and it was surprising how little inventory they had

Good to know.

I am from Louisiana and secured a vehicle from Huntsville, Alabama. They had zero problems with me coming a couple weeks later to get the car. I have no idea why New Mexico would just kill a deal with a motivated buyer like that.

That sucks, but glad to hear you got your $$ back..I don't think it's necessarily a reflection on the the state of New Mexico, you can get a s**tty dealer in any state..Trust me there are plenty of them here in Florida..

The real question is, were you able to find another 4Runner yet?

Yes. Nautical blue 2021 TRD ORP. Getting it 8/26. I currently have a 2004 with 235,000 miles... time for upgrade!

Definitely wish I had seen this sooner but I'll add another story or two for folks down the line.

When we bought our Tacoma in 2019 we knew what we wanted and what we were willing to pay with our own pre-approved financing. We start the negotiation and the manager tells us "All you want to look at is payment, not cost. Payment is the only thing you should be concerned with". We kept stating that we wanted a specific price out the door. This back and forth went on and on for 10 minutes or so. Eventually the manager stands up, tells the salesperson "come on" and just walks away. We sat there for 15 minutes and he never came back. We noticed him helping other folks so we just left and purchased elsewhere

Fast forward to this year when looking for a 22 ORP 4R. Salesperson is super friendly and invites me to drive a used 4R to see if we like it. After the drive we start looking at allocations and he says "it's $1,000 to get on the list and then we will try to find you an allocation". I asked if I could order one specific and he bring in the manager with a stern "No orders are allowed". I then ask if I get my deposit back in the event they don't find a vehicle that matches our desired spec and the manager says "We don't refund deposits, if you don't find one that's perfect, pick one close".

Toyota dealers in ABQ suck. We purchased our ORP in Durango and it's exactly what we want with no headaches.

Holy crap. I've been waiting for almost 3 months to get a 2022 lunar rock ORP from here in MD. The dealer handed me back my $500 deposit for some reason 2 weeks ago. The salesman I was working with said they don't like to hold deposits for too long. You can't believe anything any of these guys say.

I go to ABQ about 3 times/yr. Have a brother and mother who live there. I was thinking of buying in NM but won't bother now. My brother loves Durango and bought land there. I think I need to check them out! I can't believe how hard it is to buy a LR ORP but at least I have a Ford Escape to get me around until then...thanks a lot for your post!

Thanks for this. I'll stay away from these jerks. I go to ABQ 3 times/yr to visit family. Looking for a 2022 lunar rock ORP.

they're just making all the money they can on a customer, with the least amount of service they can provide. i bought about 3k worth of oem parts from mcgeorge toyota in virginia, they were about 1k cheaper than larry miller in abq. they can do business this way because, if you live here the alternatives are to go to denver, phoenix, el paso or some other big town that involves a long drive to get there.

Happy to help and sorry to hear about the tough search you're having. Thus far, I cannot recommend Durango Toyota enough. They have called every single time they said they would and have updated me weekly even if there is nothing new to report. It should arrive Wednesday so we will see how it all comes together. Best of luck my friend and post some pics when you get that Lunar Rock!

So here's another little update from this dealership which, just so everyone knows, is now Sandia Toyota.

I purchased a black front and rear valance from American Toyota across town and it arrived Friday. Unfortunately they had no available service slots for a week but, as luck would have it, Sandia Toyota had one at 12pm that same day and quoted me $97 for each one. I scheduled it and dropped the car off at 1030 because I had meetings most of the day. At 1430 I arrived back at the dealership and was told that the car was not ready but that it should only be about 30-45 more minutes. I came back at 1530 and, without even looking up from his computer, the advisor says "I'm just guessing at the time man, I don't know when it's going to be done".

After some back and forth about why I was told differently when I dropped it off, I told him I was quoted $97 for each and he responded with "We charge $160 per hour and we've now had the car for 4 hours so it's going to be more than that". I told them to get my car immediately and that I would finish everything myself. They bring the car out with only one valance installed and the other in the back of the vehicle. They agree to honor the $97 and I leave. On the way home it dawns on me that the original front valance is not in the back of the car but all the trash from the packaging is. I placed a call to the dealership and they said I could pick it up Saturday.

I got there Saturday morning and stood in the service drive for roughly 30 minutes before anyone even acknowledged me. Got my valance and left with no plans to ever return. This dealership is a total nightmare and should be avoided at all costs.

Side note: My neighbor and I removed the rear bumper and installed the black valance ourselves in under 30 minutes. I should've done the front one myself as well.
