Exclamation Anyone Own a Hilux Surf

Hi,

Ijust purchased a 1991 Hilux Surf SSR-X Diesel. I was wondering if anyone on here owns this vehicle, and can answer amy question.

The steering on the vehicle seems loose, I know it wont be as tight as my BMW. I dont think it is an issue, I am just wondering if this is a common feel, or if this is an issue, the vehicle steers fine, it just feels a lot looser than what I am used to?

The truck has been rebuilt with new suspension (no longer has air, thank god) Replaced head (is a 2.4 but has the 3.0L head) and all the parts that go along with that.

Thanks

The steering gearbox should be the same as the 4runner. I feel like I need to adjust mine as well, but there should be a nut and stud somewhere along the top of box. Sorry. I haven't looked yet, but it should be there.

If all else fails, I'll just trade you. I want a diesel.

Im sure its nothing to worry about, I am just used to the steering on my BMW. Is there anything wrong with your steering, or just needs to be tightened???
Thankfully there is a shop here for parts!
What year is your 4runner? Hilux for any good price are hard to find here, I lucked out really. But I dont like that it is RHD but I will get used to it.

It just has a little more freeplay than I would like. It is different from rack and pinion type steering though.

Mine is a 94. Also if your shop fails you, rockauto has a good range of parts selection as well.

RHD sounds cool. I wonder how hard it would be to get one from Canada. haha.

Post up some pictures!

There's a CT4WD member in Calgary who is parting out a 90 Surf right now if you're in need of anything. He regularly buys them, takes what he needs for his own Surf, then parts out the rest.

That would be me.

I have a 91 that's very modified. See 2nd gen pic thread. Solid front axle, intercooler, exhaust etc etc.

I would check the idler arm for play. They have a tendency to fail. If you wheel it, it will fail often. Carry a spare. Better yet buy my upgraded arm with bronze bushings and a brace. Can't buy em anywhere for rhd so I made my own. Worked great. If the entire steering system is tight at the joints than look at the box. Like said above a little nut and adjuster screw.

If you need any help feel free to ask. I've parted out a few so I have lots of weird rhd specific parts the the 4runners didn't or were opposite.
