This is something i have wondered for a while now. My 1993 blazer and my 99 rodeo both had 2 outlets up front stock. Its surprising that with all the gadgets that people have these days they did not think about this. At least it is easy and cheap to add them. Like $15 total if you go the radio shack route.

This mod only bypasses the accessory circuit that operates the relay. The DC SKT circuit itself (the outlets themselves) is still protected by the original 15A fuse which gives 180W between 2 outlets.

I double-checked today -- wife had a rental 2005 Camry this week. It has 2 power outlets, one in the storage box between the front seats and one on the dash. Plus it has the cigarette lighter.

Granted, one in the storage box is awkward to get to, but why should it have 3 available and the 4Runner only 2 (and only if you add the ash tray)?

BTW, I checked the manual and it seems that the load for all 3 is still 120W total.

Great mod. Actually I was thinking of adding 1power outlets (all-time running) behind the armrest box. Usually I have my coolant behind the driver seat or DVD player on top of armrest for kids, so I need outlet there, plus I can recharge my cell phone in the small tray behind DAC control button.
BTW, after these mods, what's happening with outlet in trunk? Is it working after ignition is off too?

Yes. All the stock 12V outlets are on the DC SKT circuit. That's why I did this in the first place. To keep the Koolatron in the back operating.

Cool!

I love these "Fixes". Thank you Kmvreter! Now I just need to find a different switched power for my radar detector.

Nice mod Kmreter. It took me about 10 minutes thanks to your explanations and pictures. One question though, my cigarette lighter does not work with this mod....is there another mod I need to do? The only 12 V. outlets working with this mod is the one in front and on the cargo. I appreciate your response. Thanks

Not sure about this because I don't have the third (cig. lighter) outlet. I would think they are all on the same circuit but obviously not. You could look at the wiring diagrams to figure a mod for this (again, I don't have the outlet so I wouldn't need to mod it.)

Actually you might want one switched outlet for a radar detector or similar equipment that you want turned off when the ignition is off. Sort of the best of both worlds

Kmvreter,
Thanks a lot for info and pictures. Knowing me I'd turn the "10 minute" job into at least 30 minutes

This may be a stupid question, but having the 12V on all the time, would that run down the battery?
Thanks

yes.. and depends on what you have on all the time. Charging a phone vs. keeping a laptop running.

Having the on/off switch will prevent unneccessary charging of toys.
