Destroy stock speaker, or build/buy speaker haeness?

I have been slowly transferring me audio set up from my old car, to the new. The next thing on my list is to put in aftermarket 6x9's in the front (I will buy new speakers for the rear eventually), but I am not sure if I should destroy the stock speaker and mount the new one into it, or buy/build some sort of mounting harness for the speaker. Has anyone had any experience with this?

I used the plastic OEM speaker mounts and although it took a little effort, they worked great. Photos of the front 6x9's. (I ended up going with a three way system so these were removed.)

As you can see, I sealed these with silicone so its a pretty permanent installation. The foam around the front of the speaker is cut from pipe insulation. It seals against the inside of the door panel. I had to trim about 1/4" off the plastic flange on the door panel so everything mated tightly but did not interfere with the door panel fitting against the inside of door properly.

I also have after market 6x9s in the factory speaker mounts. Worked fine for Rockford Fosgates. What stereophonic turds those stock speakers are. I don't think Walmart would sell Toyota speakers out of pride and adherence to some minimal standards.

It depends on if you have the JBL system or not, the non-JBL SR5 speakers will not be easy to reuse, the JBL ones however are much easier. I've installed on both types, and the JBL I was able to reuse, the non-JBL I was not and had to use adapters. Check out How do I install stereo, speakers, subwoofer, amplifier, tweeters ipod in my Tacoma Toyota that's where I got my adapters from
