added 12v power charger - only works when headlights are on?!?

this afternoon, i added a power port to my 4th gen. i tapped into the wires in the cigarette smoker/ashtray kit as detailed here: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/access...connector.html.

i also wired it with the 115v toyota switch (even though i am not installing an inverter). here is the wiring diagram: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/audio-...tml#post245497

i used position 6 for positive (pink with blue wire), position 4 as ground coming from the extra plug, and position 3 was grounded out. i also used one of the positive green wires to connect to the positive end to the power plug.

here's my problem: it only works when the headlights are switched on! once that happens, the switch does lit up and supply power to the plugs as needed. how do i get it to work without using the headlights? i know this behavior is not normal, because when i wanted to add another plug, i searched the forum here and loads of people tapped into the unused cigarette plug. i understand it probably has something to do with opening up a closed circuit, but that's as far as my understanding goes.

what am i doing wrong and how can i fix it?

Just out of curiosity try to ground the power charger on its own. I'm wondering if the ground that was tapped into is a switched ground with the headlights.

thanks for the tip...i appreciate it.

grounding it out not through the switch actually made it turn on when the power is on. should i be taping into another power source? i seriously am bashing my brains and have no idea what happened. i know this has worked for other people...
