Pioneer AVIC-D1

I just installed the Pioneer AVIC-D1 Navigation unit with XM Navtraffic, and think it's amazing. Quite easy to install, didn't even have to use the speed sensor, and the navigation is dead on accurate. If you're thinking about this unit, I highly recommend it.

How does the navigation track you when you lose the satellite signal? Have you driven through a long tunnel yet? Or on a really cloudy day?

I'm considering the AVIC-D1 and have a couple questions.

1. What did you use for faceplate trim so there are no gaps on the sides of the unit?

2. Is there a solution to retain the steering wheel controls?

The Alpine NVE-N872A looks nice... if it ever officially gets released. It can do the Sirius traffic. (I'd rather Sirius than XM).

Anyway, lets see some pics of the install!

Having a double DIN I didn't have to use any faceplate, it fit perfectly with the trim around the controls. I have a 2002, which was pre-steering wheel controls.

Thus far I've driven through a decently long tunnel and had no problem tacking satellites. I haven't had any sever clouds to test it with yet, but so far no problems. I drove up into the mountains in California, and it had no problem maintianing contact through the canyons.

Also impressive while on this trip, I traveled off-road on a forest service "maintained" dirt road and the road appeared on the map the entire way.

My AVIC-N2 is hooked up to the speed sensor, I also believe the unit does have a gyroscope.

The one time I noticed the tracking was off was when exiting an underground parking lot. After about 5 seconds, it corrected itself.

fit?

so will the AVIC-D1 fit on a 2005?
websites (bestbuy.com, crutchfield.com) say it doesn't.

Yes....it is a double din unit...it will fit. I almost went with it, but went with the N2 instead because of feature set.
