Unhappy Overheated 2006 SR5 6 cylinder engine 4WD

I was on the freeway and the lower radiator hose chose to come off and empty the coolant out. I had no indication of the engine overheating until the engine shut down. The temp. gauge was right where it was supposed to be. The first lights to come on were for the transmission/transaxle, the slippage light among others. It was towed to a dealer who remover the heads and found scoring on the cylinder walls and valve seats loosened. The car has 77,000 miles on it. My question is is there a way to test the transmission while replacing the engine? Anything else to have looked at?

Thanks for any info at all,
Jeff

Temperature gauge measures coolant temperature at the outlet of the engine block. Your coolant was empty. Therefore, high engine temperature could not be measured.
