filter test
The filter test data sounds like a AC Delco sales ad!

Air filter flow
I find it odd that no after market systems don't simply create an air box capable of holding two stock, or at least close to stock filters.
This would obviously increase flow more than the percentage of one after market filter. But still use approved OEM filters.
In some older engine compartments with simple round filters, an extra long bolt can let you stack an extra filter on top.

I am sticking with OEM airfilter...how about you?

The OEM filter is well made and I have 3 more sitting on the shelf. Particulates fine enough to pass this filter can end up in your oil and that is why the oil should be frequently changed. A filter with finer media would have to be huge.

It's actually very simple. Remove the air filter and drive around the block. You will notice nothing except it is now louder. If in fact you believe you feel as if it is faster, then go ahead and spend some money.

Agreed. Aftermarket companies make a lot of money with slick and deceptive promotion, preying upon the human psychology. Infomercials interest me in this methodology. It's the American way!

Perhaps there is no pressure drop across one filter, that two in parallel might reduce.

There's also a lot of people that swear they feel power from a TBS on all the Toyota boards I've been on and this is on direct port engines meaning the TBS absolutley can't work on our motors.

I can't get to the test result link. I'm running a TRD re-usable drop in element. Should I switch back to a stock OEM element? Any advise would be appreciated!

I'm sur we will, but if the stock element offers better filtering then I will switch back.

the one thing I'm surprised no one has said is "why don't you use a high flow filter on the road where the dist is minimal and then go to OEM when going off-road?"
you don't really need the small power gain and mpg gain off-road but you do need the dust filtering, on the highway its the other way round

Are you guys just talking about the filter alone or the whole intake tube, intake manifold, thottle body etc? If so than what about cold air intakes reguardless of manufacture. I'm planning on finding, buying, and installing a snorkel for my 4Runner 4.0L V-6. I want it to be a real performance SUV like a Porsche Cayene Turbo or a G-class. Would the high inlet open (via the top of the B-pillar) mean less dust? Still not sure.

A snorkel actually reduces performance by adding something that big into the airstream and a 4Runner (V6 at that) will never be in the class of a Ceyenne w/o some major dough into the engine bay.
You'd be better off shooting for the perf of a RAV4 which is nearly a mid 14 in the 1/4 mile and almost 130 on the highway.

I think that you're asking your 4runner to be too many things at once. First, you want it to off-road with the best of them, but your 4runner is 2WD. Next, you want it to have lots of power and handle just as good as a real performance SUV like Cayenne...yet, you have a V6. Don't forget, you have a body-on-frame design and solid rear axle which will automatically make the 4runner inferior to Cayenne (and just about every other fully independent suspension unibodied SUV) in handling. BTW, the G-class is a horrible handler and is not a performance SUV by any stretch of the imagination!
I think that you need to step back and take a look at your 4runner and then decide which route you're gonna go. IMHO, if you want to be an off-roader, then save your money and trade in your 2wd 4runner and get a real 4wd vehicle (FJ, Jeep, 4runner, etc.). If you want a high performance SUV, then again, trade in your 4runner and get something more capable ON-ROAD (RAV4 V6, BMW X3, Infiniti EX, upcoming Mercedes GLK, Acura RDX). You're wasting your money on modifications on a 2wd 4runner that you want to take it off-road while also taking it to the racetrack. Now, if you just want a 4runner to tow things and to go places, then stick to your current 4runner.
My opinion...good luck either way.

Sorry if I got a off hand, if you will, but I now work at a Firestone service garage and I saw someone order alot of custom work (biltsein shocks, Kumho 265 tires, and a revised drive shaft) on his Mitsu Montero. It rides on 22's and I had to test drive around the garage and it was fantasic! It handle about the same as my friends eclipse rs. I know that my SUV is 2wd drive and all, but I don't want to haul a heavy transfer case and spend my $$$ on more gas. It has plenty of ground clearance, does very well in my off roading area (for a 2wd hangs with the best jeep 4x4s) and I really WANT to make it like a Porsche, a BMW X5. They can both go fast and off-road well. I thought that I might do some custom work to the engine, suspension, etc. I know it cost a lot of $$$, but I'm willing to go the distance. I already have a Rav4, a 97 with 120,000 dependable miles. But thats my stupid S#$@ car. like doing E-brake turns in the parking lots at dark. Again like I said before I appreiciate all comments and Thai kinda helped me put things in a more "reasonable" way. I have heard of ways of converting 2wd to 4wd and I might go that way but not now. I'll just take my mods one at a time.

MY brother switched to a K&N air filter about a year ago and recently has been having engine problems as a result of the air filter actually. It was one to go into the OEM slot and the problems started after the first time he cleaned it. Mind you he is no professional but did follow the cleaning instructions and apparently the oil used to "recharge" the air filter got into his engine to cause some problems. I am sorry I do not have more details but needless to say his experience has turned me off buying a K&N HIK kit for my 4Runner.

Here is something to think about. I have worked on aircraft, mostly helicopters, for the past 12 years. Here is the history. One of my previous jobs was on the island of Maui. (2 1/2 years there) The first "test" helicopter for the company was a 1979 Bell Jetranger with a Rolls Royce 250-C20B turbine engine. We would have to do an engine wash (rinsing the compressor section) once a week. Otherwise the temps would start to rise and they wouldn't pull enough power to complete the lifting job. The sand there (and on the smaller island of the southern shore known as Kahoolave) is very fine and red. After one week the wash water would come out redish brown. We installed a FDC Aerofilter kit which replaced a partical seperator system. Afterwards, the engine washes were almost monthly (would make it to the 150 hour requirement) and the water would come out clean. They were a finiancial life saver. They are pretty much a K&N filter for your helicopter. You can use K&N oil on the filters. That was my selling point on K&N's theory. Here is link to the website for FDC if you are curious.

Like I said, Just something to think about.
