When we last saw our intrepid hero, he had been told that changing from F to C was a computer customization setting, but his display unit was not responding to the commands....
My T4R spent yesterday in the shop to get a new display unit and Celsius readout customization. When I got in and turned the key, the temperature display was in ...... F.
I said "Huh?!?!?" The technician was summoned. I said "you did nothing!!!!" He said the display unit was indeed faulty and he replaced it. "But..." I said, "...you are missing the point. The whole reason it was in here was to change from F to C!!!!!"
Guess what the reply was...."You can't do that." He went on to dutifully explain that display units on T4Rs shipped to the US are designed to read in F..only. My response was, of course...." 3 weeks ago it was a computer customization issue -- what changed?" After going back and fortha few times on this, he did promise to call California and ask them. (is that where the Toyota service Gods in the US are?) He has not yet returned my call from this morning.
NOW, totally frustrated, I ***** to my fiance in Japan. She drives a Toyota (Porte) and is on good terms with the folks in her local Toyopet, so she makes a few calls and gets the ichiban of this stuff in Japan.
Are you on the edge of your seats?!?!?
My local technician was close....the environmental sensors installed on vehicles for the US market transmit data in US metrics, such as Farenheit. (There are others apparently.) So the display unit is designed to read in F, because the sensors are designed to transmit only in F.
Think of 2 mercury thermometers...one has scales for C and F on either side, one has only the F scale. My Land Rover was like the first one, and I could change the display with a switch. The US T4R only has a F scale readout. Period end of story.
If I learn any more I will edit this, but it looks like a closed book on the F to C display change.
