Hi,

Sorry for the delay in responding about the F to C problem. I have been dealing with my local dealer here in Edmonton, Alberta Canada and they have been quite helpful but unfortunately the problem is not solved.

Initally the word was disconnecting the battery for an hour should reset it, however after numerous tries the dealer admitted defeat and escalated the problem. After corresponding with Toyota Canada and supposidely with Japan no one knows why it should be in F instead of C. At one point they were saying it was physically impossible that Canadian 4runners could display temps in F. Looking at my display in F obviously disproves this logic.

The dealer now says the only solution is a very expensive replacement of the whole climate control module. Crazy.

Meanwhile the two backlight lamps for the LCD have gone out so in a way it is good as I can't see the LCD at night and have the F bugging me :-)

Sorry to all those of you who still operate in F but my mind only thinks in Celcius so this really bugs me but not enough to lay out serious dollars to fix it.

Anybody out there find out anything different, I was thinking perhaps it is the sensor that do either a C or F reading and not the module. The problem appeared about the time I got the windshield replaced, anybody know where the outside temp sensor is located?

Regards,

Mike

You are probably on the right track. Land Rovers can switch bet F and C with a key combination. Just need to find someone who knows what it is.....

I have the same issue, I want C, not F

OK, Boris, I heard this too today from my dealer's service manager...it is a customization that has to be set by computer. Will take it in Friday and give it a shot!! Will let you know!

I'll be looking forward to your response, it will be interesting to see if another dealer can fix the problem. I'm still reading in F.

My 4Runner was a US based vehicle that I brought over and was wondering how to change from imperial measures to metric measures.....any magic for the digital odometer or does that require a complete swap?.....looking forward to some answers....

odometer/temp conversions

For whatever it is worth-- we live in Canada and my husband has a 2004 Chrysler Pacifica (which he really loves).

One of his car's greatest assets is that you can convert the digital odometer/temperature readouts from miles to kilometers and fahrenheit to celsius at the touch of a button. (The speedometer is also automatically adjusted!) We do a lot of travelling in the U.S. and it really is quite helpful.

That would be one feature Toyota could add to the 4Runner that would be appreciated by all of us who frequently drive back and forth across the Canadian/U.S. border!

Well, it was in the shop for 6 hours to 1. program new remote, and 2. change the thermometer display from F to C.

I left with a functioning new remote and thermometer on F, lol. The service manager told me that the display unit was malfunctioning, and was not receiving messages from the computer to reset to a C display. He ordered a new display unit and we will try again next week.

To be continued...

odometer/temp conversions

Shimajilosan I'm anxiously waiting to here the outcome. I'm truly stunned that a first rate automaker like Toyota would not make switching form us/metric as simple as pushing a button. The Cougar my dad had 20 years ago could do this. I think its just Toyota's way of not giving you everything they got. Hopefully you can extract some info. from the dealer that we can take to our, it would be nice to know if the odometer could also be changed. Thanks.

My Camry has the button to convert from English to metric. I have no idea why Toyota didn't include it in the 4Runner.

Angry You Can't Get There From Here

When we last saw our intrepid hero, he had been told that changing from F to C was a computer customization setting, but his display unit was not responding to the commands....

My T4R spent yesterday in the shop to get a new display unit and Celsius readout customization. When I got in and turned the key, the temperature display was in ...... F.

I said "Huh?!?!?" The technician was summoned. I said "you did nothing!!!!" He said the display unit was indeed faulty and he replaced it. "But..." I said, "...you are missing the point. The whole reason it was in here was to change from F to C!!!!!"

Guess what the reply was...."You can't do that." He went on to dutifully explain that display units on T4Rs shipped to the US are designed to read in F..only. My response was, of course...." 3 weeks ago it was a computer customization issue -- what changed?" After going back and fortha few times on this, he did promise to call California and ask them. (is that where the Toyota service Gods in the US are?) He has not yet returned my call from this morning.

NOW, totally frustrated, I ***** to my fiance in Japan. She drives a Toyota (Porte) and is on good terms with the folks in her local Toyopet, so she makes a few calls and gets the ichiban of this stuff in Japan.

Are you on the edge of your seats?!?!?

My local technician was close....the environmental sensors installed on vehicles for the US market transmit data in US metrics, such as Farenheit. (There are others apparently.) So the display unit is designed to read in F, because the sensors are designed to transmit only in F.

Think of 2 mercury thermometers...one has scales for C and F on either side, one has only the F scale. My Land Rover was like the first one, and I could change the display with a switch. The US T4R only has a F scale readout. Period end of story.

If I learn any more I will edit this, but it looks like a closed book on the F to C display change.
