Mine stopped working when I got an aftermarket CD player. The head unit did not have a way to control the antenna, so it was left in the down position. I don't mind it and I haven't noticed any difference in reception.
I know it's a bit of work to replace it with a fixed antenna. I would leave it in the down position and disconnect the antenna wire from the back of your unit to keep the motor from running. This may or may not be a solution for you. You can search for the fixed antenna switch, I know someone did a write up of now to replace it.
