Anyone w/ magnaflow and stock resonator?

So far I have searched this forum and not found anyone with a performance exhaust that does not drone under acceleration in the 1500-2000 rpm range. My exhaust guy says a 22" magnaflow with the stock resonator retained would be reasonably quiet inside the vehicle. Has anyone put an aftermarket muffler; magnaflow, flowmaster, etc. into the stock system? I think the Jaos system uses 2 mufflers, has anyone actually ridden in a vehicle with this system? There seems to be a number of people who install after market catbacks that remove them because they are too loud, can any of you share your experience?

When I first got my Magnaflow, it was the 14" (the "loudest" one) and it did not drone with the resonator. I then had the resonator cut off and it got a bit louder but not bad. Anyway, if you want to avoid drone, you should definitely be safe leaving the resonator in tact and getting a larger muffler like the 22" at which you're looking.

I have been doing some research and have been told that a resonator in front of the muffler would eliminate the drone better. I think a great system would be a magnaflow catback with a resonator welded in just behind the flange. This is really what the TRD is I think because the picture I saw of the TRD has a resonator in that position and most people say they drone less.

Cat back magnaflow

I have the cat back magnaflow and really wish I could put the resonator on. Its not loud outside, sounds very good, but inside is another story. When the weather gets better and I have some time, I'm going to dynomat the rear floor behind the front seats and the cargo area. Hope that will provide some sound deadening. Otherwise, I really do like the exhaust. Had to get someone to drive it so I could listen to realize it wasn't that loud outside compared to what it sounded inside around 1800 2200. My .2cents!

Jaos uses two mufflers and TRD has a muffler with a resonator in front of it. It sounds like these are the two least offensive catbacks available. It has been said that a simple super turbo muffler installed in the stock system sounds right but my exhaust guy says that those are cheap quality mufflers. I am considering either a 22" magnaflow or 20" super turbo retaining the stock resonator. If the sound is good then you could replace the resonator with a SS muffler and tip ala Jaos. If it is still too loud then you could try a resonator in front of the muffler. Bottom line is that the stock muffler is real (too) quiet and must be very restictive!

I did the 18" Magnaflow and kept the resonator, smidge louder, but not that much.

Saaggie,
Are you getting any partial throttle drone in the cabin?

Its a little louder, but you get used to it quickly. Biggest thing is staying off the gas for the first couple miles, reminds you that its a V8.

Bobster you ever do this? How did the drone work out and did you get the sound you were hoping for? I am thinking of doing this exact setup on my 08 v8.

I am one person whose truck has a performance exhaust and no done problem.

I installed a Tundra resonance silencer about 2'' behind the flowmaster.

Did you leave the stock resonator or cut it off? Looks like a good set up I may give it whirl...

My stock resonator is still on... but I'm going to chop it off as soon as I get some free cash. Going to run a nice tip straight out the back.

3" in 3" out center off set? PT#17949?
Where did you buy, and did you get the SS clamps pt#36439

Looking to do this per your recommendation so thanks!

I think I bought mine from Summit Racing. I didn't buy any clamps...the exhaust shop welded it into place for me.

Keep in mind that if you have all 3 factory catalytic converters in place plus the resonator...it's not going to be much louder than stock unless you're at full throttle. The 3rd cat and the resonator need to go bye-bye. There's no need for either of them. The only reason they are there was so toyota could classify these as "LE Vehicles".
