chuey12, I did not add any more tranny fluid to it. I did not see the point as I only lost maybe an ounce at most when I did the install. The cooler itself does not take much fluid so I think I am alright. I have towed about 6000 pounds and no tranny overheating problems at all.

I am going to give this an attempt in the next day or two. I just bought a 4100lb travel trailer and want to make sure I do all I can to protect the 4runner. I also ordered a better hitch and picked up a prodigy brake controller.
Questions.
- After I drop the skid plate I will want to tap into the return line to the tranny...correct?
- Is this line on the drivers side of the car?
I am sure it shold become apparant when I drop the skid plate and get under the truck. I just want to make sure I put the cooler in correctly.
This may have to wait until Sunday my honey dew list this weekend includes sodding the back yard.
Any guidence you guys have will be greatly appreciated.

Just wondering, doesn't the 4Runner come with a transmission cooler standard like the GX does from the factory?

What Toyota says about v6 tranny cooler install
I got news back from the Toyota people. The following was cut and pasted from my email.
Response (Jessica C) 01/26/2007 08:17 AM Thank you for contacting Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.
We apologize; we do not recommend or assist with modifying our vehicles from their original factory specifications.
Modifications could affect the vehicle

Re: Re: What Toyota says about v6 tranny cooler install
That is my question, do we go from the existing radiator transmission cooler to the new ext. cooler then back to the trans or do we go around the radiator? I would think you go through the existing radiator, then to the new cooler. that way the radiator still helps to cool the oil a bit before it gets to the ext. cooler and you don't need to plug anything. I plan on adding a cooler to my 96 4runner 4wd. I just bought a brand new crate motor for it and the 4runner seems to have problems towing. I was spraying oil on my last trip (300 miles) if anyone has any advice I would be greatfull.
God Bless

So it looks like it does have a transmission cooler, just different from the V8 one that is outside (external) the radiator.
The members earlier in this thread say that the external one they installed does not hold much fluid, so it might not be any larger than the stock one internal to the radiator. Also, it's unclear whether they are bypassing the stock one, or adding the external transmission cooler in addtion to the stock one.

I was poking around looking at the cooler just yesterday and i saw that the V8 one has a integral cooler in the radiator (like the V6) then comes out to a external one in front of the radiator, so it pretty has dual coolers.
I was thinking of dumping the small stock one and putting in a bigger cooler thats made by Calsonic (its a Nissan 300ZX oil cooler) its a better core design made for flow and large fluid capacity. This cooler holds a additional 1qt of oil. Its about 12" wide, 10" tall, and 2.25" thick.

Bored. Thought I'd add a few pics of my install. I took inspiration from LV4R, thank-you.

Make sure the cooler you get is setup for 3/8" line size. Many have 5/16" fittings which will restrict flow. I chose an engine oil cooler and screwed in my own fittings.
How much line? I forget... I purchased by the foot fom a local parts store. It's cheap. Get 8 feet and you'll be fine, 5-6 is probably enough but why come up short. It's 3/8" ID hose. Get genuine transmission cooler line (not fuel line) and I highly recommend fuel injection style hose clamps. NAPA stores usually carry both.
Look at my pics to see the clamp type.

Yes, http://store.summitracing.com/partde...56+4294782889, this one will be good. I used the thicker variant but that's wretched excess. Mine measures almost 1.5" thick but the same in other dimensions. I could possibly have issues with overcooling in cold climates too. If I've linked to the one you're buying my 2 cents is that it's perfect.

I got it...installed it......and it's fine! Hardest part was figuring how and where you want to mount it! I also did not add any oil...or lost any oil. EASY! Should be the first mod!
