Running Board lights

I decided the other day I wanted to try putting lights on my running boards since I don't have stock lights. I removed the boards and am in the process of researching what can work on them for the look I want.

The other running board light posts have an installation similar to the stock setup with a light source at each end on the caps themselves. I'm not exactly thrilled with that look as it illuminates more of other areas then just the running board area. My goal is to lightly illuminate the entire running board at once, with no hot spots. So when it goes on, the entire running board itselve lights up making it extremely easy to see it, but it doesn't light up the entire ground area or half of my doors.

I was searching around some stores yesterday and found the EL Tape lights (however they are designed for indoor use only), and then I found something exactly like I was looking for at Pep Boys, which is designed to illuminate wheel wells, under running boards and other areas, but it wasn't designed to light up the board itself, just under it. And on top of that, the damn thing was $120 for each strip (i'd need 2).

The small EL Tape option is the exact size of what I am looking for, but it needs to be longer and then somehow designed a little more durable for the weather. I'd like to put the light source above the running board, either in that small gap at the top of the board and the beginning of the body or maybe just on the bottom of hte budy.

Anyone know of any lights like that or have a reccommendation to help achieve the look i'm aiming for?

I don't know if there is room or not to hide it so you can't see the tube, but have you thought about running rope lights?

If I were to put the lighting within the small gap, it would be a max of 1/4" or so from what I saw, and thats estimating a little high. I was looking more for a flat type light, which at the same time of being small, would also allow me to have it a little more directional vs a full 360 degree rope light.
