Auxiliary Lights with remote +Legality in NYS!

Are there any other auxiliary lights from other manufacturers out there like the Jaos off road challenger with the remote, or these are the only lights with it? I want to minimize installation and the Jaos lights seem to be the best so far. Also, where can I find information about what is legal in New York State in terms of auxiliary lights or off road lights. I did a search and couldn't find much on the subject. :awais:

Don't know the laws regarding aux lights, but I do have the JAOS lights. You're right, the wiring loom and the little remote made installation very easy. No wires through the firewall. Just unroll the wiring loom, plug in the lights, make a few easy connections (don't forget the little ground wire that can fall out of sight--the lights won't work without it grounded). I mounted the little remote box on top of the fuse box, plugged its short wire into the socket and stuck the little remote pad (it has a sticky pad on the back) on the dash, just to the left of the steering column, in that row of switches (blends in nicely, almost same color and size). When I have to dim the headlights with the left side stalk, it's an easy reach down to the little remote on the dash. It's nearly worth the price of admission just for that little remote.

I seem to remember from years ago that some states allow aux lights to be on only when the main high-beams are also on. Seems like the old wiring schematics had the lights wired into the high beam. I wired my JAOS lights into the low beam circuit. They turn off with the headlights, so can't forget and leave them on to drain the battery.

So the headlights can be operated independently high and low beams, and the JAOS lights can be operated independently high and low beams. Thus, I can have the headlights on low (can also have the factory fogs on in that case) and the JAOS lights can be on either low or high beam. I can switch the headlights to high (and the fogs will turn off) and have the JAOS lights on either low or high. When both the headlights and JAOS lights are on high, it's pretty damned bright. I think I posted my thoughts and some tips several months back--search might find it. The instructions were in Japanese, but still was easy to do with the picture schematic. Don't know if they're legal the way they're wired, but I like the options and combinations of lights.

Here's a thread with some pictures of my Runner with the JAOS lights. I went with the smaller lamp stay, although the larger CP looks good, too. Kinda liked the minimalist look of the stay. Apparently they sell an extender so you can mount 4(!) of the JAOS lamps up there. Now, that'll get some folk's attention.

I'd imagine the info would be on your state's DMV site? I think the JAOS lights are illegal to have on while driving through the regular roads because they are more than 55watts. Will you get a ticket for it, maybe. It all depends on the cop and the situation I suppose.

I found this site from the State of New York Assembly about Vehicle and Traffic Law, it doesn't mention anything specifically to off road lighting. Only this:"No light having a candlepower rating in
excess of thirty-two candle power shall be used on any vehicle, unless
it is of a type approved by the commissioner."
This is the website, maybe someone can have better eyes and find something related to off road lights!
