V8 2006 XREAS Shock Replacement Time, 5100x4 or 6112/5100 combo?

So i finally have the $$ to replace my shocks, my truck has 72000 mi on it, V8 w RAS. i was initially sold on the 6112/5100 combo, but now i'm looking at the costs and its a steep difference...is it really worth the extra 500-600 for the 6112's up front? how are the 5100's all around versus the combo? would love to hear opinions, i know i've read that the 5100's are stiff, but if anyone has tried both it would be a huge help to hear your thoughts.
im seeing the combo for sale at shock surplus w the 6112's assembled and the rear 5100's for $969...whereas the 5100x4 is $399...big difference.

Seems the 6112's paired with the 5100's out back isn't an optimal setup. I think Bilstein recommends the 5160 reservoir shock for the rear.

Any luck with your research and decision? I'm considering a similar setup if I can find the FJ springs at a good price. Not sure I want to spend the money on the Bilstein 6112

In my humble opinion I absolutely think it was worth it...

The moment you move into a 2.5" diamater shock body you end up with something that feels... different.

I've rode on 5100s before, and its nice, but more of a street-centric feel. Its kind of hard to explain but things like small city dips and bumps that you still felt with a 5100 pretty much disappeared with the 6112. Off-road it just felt more controlled, damped, without any of that chatter/shock/jarring on something like a fireroad.

I know a lot of people say if you dont off-road a lot you dont need bigger shocks, but after trying it myself I came to the conclusion larger body has more fluid, larger valving, and moves more fluid to do the same work as a smaller shock and it allows the shock to just feel nicer, literally in all driving situations.

The 6112 is probably one of the best upgrades I have done... and IMO it was still somewhat budget minded considering what it cost to buy a 2.5" diameter shock from someone else like ICON, King, or Fox. I just cant afford to go there yet, but I think the 6112 was a really solid middle ground.

I also went a bit budget on the rears with the 5100s and at times I think the rears are lacking when off-road, at least when you compare it to the fronts... if I could do it over again I feel like I should have went with at least the 5160 rear but I dont know if thats even going to satisfy my wants after trying something bigger. When the time comes, ill get something bigger.

That said, the city/freeaway/on-road drive is pretty nice. Its still good enough that I haven't ripped them off yet.

I had some additional details, pictures, and comments I posted in a different thread here.

Ok, so if I consider the 6112's after what I've read, what is the better option on a budget for the rear - 5160 or OME's, or something else? Do I need new springs? I want a lift of 2" or so and leveled.

I'm sure there is a write up somewhere for removing the XREAS and doing the install.

If you are on stock springs I would say go with the 6112. As far as the rears. I havery heard that the icon 2.0 pairs up well to the 6112s. However. I have a gx470 with RAS, stock springs and the Bilstein 5100s all the way around it is great. But it is all at stock height and is a grocery getter and kid hauler. I also have a t4r with a v6, 265/70/17s, fj springs, and 5100s all the way around and the ride feels a bit firm. Which I like. It gives me less body roll and is very responsive. However I am considering going up to a 275/70/17 and if I did this I am likely going with 6112/5160 combined with 2" icon coils in the back. Just for frame of reference.

Budget options for the rear I would still consider using the 5100, for the money I dont think I could have bought a better shock.

That said, if you do like to push the truck or off-road often, I would look at the 5160 ICON 2.0 but I have no experience with either one of those options.

I dont know why I didn't consider the OME Nitrocharger shocks at the time, they didn't SEEM popular, but they dont cost that much more than the 5100. If anything this is probably what I should have tried first since I got OME rear coils... I didn't know until later on, but my friend has them on his Tacoma and they ride pretty nice off-road.

Rear springs: I used the OME 2895 rear coils for a 2" lift. Its a stiffer 260lb spring but it feels great on and off-road. If its a street setup and you just like a softer plush ride or you dont carry a lot of weight you might be better off with a 200lb spring. I like the stiffer ride with less body roll and feels great with a bunch of weight in the rear too.

With all my gear in the truck, it sits perfectly level, and unloaded its got a little rake to it, which its supposed to have. (6112 are on the 2nd to the highest notch setting)

Completely empty...
Fronts measure (center of wheel to fender) 23"
Rear measure (center of wheel to finder) 24"

It levels out with my full load out... I would estimate 200-300 lb? The cooler, gas, and water on the hitch mounted carrier is off axle too.

For an 11 year old vehicle that won't go off road much and will eventually go to my wife, I'm thinking the price of the 5100's may be the better option.

I'm getting ready to do new shocks, springs, in our '08 AWD/V8 Ltd, replacing the existing - and totally crapped out - XREAS system.

It's a pretty light duty truck, towing very light stuff like PWCs, maybe a trailer with some mulch, off road is mostly the beach.

I think I'm going with the 5100s on all four corners, FJC springs, then possibly a 1-1.5" rear spacer to get things even, or just a just of front rake.

Oh yeah? I haven't really looked for them since several months ago, I hope they're available, I mean, I guess there's always the option of going through a dealer if the price isn't insane.

I am interested to know what you went with on the rears. I have a 2008 V8 Limited with 90000 miles that I bought back in March. It has the xreas system, but not much documentation has been done besides a service on the system at 54000 miles. I am looking at going the 6112/5160 route. I will be doing a lot of highway driving with some, but minimal (10%) off-roading. I am wondering if I should keep the system for now, as it seems ok, if the upgrade will make the highway driving more uncomfortable, or maybe even the opposite. I also was considering Icons as you said.

My advice is to wait until the suspension is bothering you. I replaced mine at about 120k because I was starting to get car sick going over bumps and pot holes. If it isnt adequate for highway driving,. towing or off roading, then go ahead and replace it. If youre getting by as is, then Id wait
