roof rack for 2nd gen?

Any 2nd gen. guys out there without factory roof rack on there 4runner. Mine does not and I want to add one. Should I try to get a old factory one or buy a new aftermarket Thule roof rack. Need it to carry my bike this summer

generally you have a better load rating if you get the racks that mount to the door frames or rain gutters than using the factory rack.

i have both a thule on my subaru and a yakima on my 4runner. both are very well made, i'd just go with whatever you can get a better deal on.

Hi, I hope this the right time to ask a question about my subaru roof rack.
So I have a 1995 Subaru that has no roof rack and a sunroof.
I've read a few posts I found using the search I did but Im still unclear. Based on what I read it kinda sounded like having a sunroof creates problems with getting a roof rack.

curious

i wonder about placement of the stock one to after market. the stock OEM one would put a cargo box or bike farther back from being in the direct wind. where the Thule/Yakima rack would put your stuff more directly in the wind. any pro's and cons on that?

I've got a 1995 and I'm looking for the same thing. My current setup is a Yamika hitch bike rack with ski/snowboard adapter because I was worried how secure the Yakima/Thule roof racks are since they just clip on. Also I wanted to make sure they wouldnt scratch my paint.

Let me know what you find out!

2nd gen with sunroof

I have a 92 4runner (in love) and am looking into full roof racks. It currently has the rear factory rack but it is beat to hell and bent up. I am interested in a full roof rack that I can still have sunroof access/use.
I have seen the baja option for the 4th/5th gens but have not found any compatible with 2nd gens.
Very partial to the prisnu and that would be my preference but again cannot find anything compatible with a 92.
Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Hey everyone,

Has anyone seen or come up with a good way of sorting this out?

I've got an 89 2 door 2nd gen 4runner.
It's had a full roof rack on it for years that was bolted through the roof in 4 spots, 2 front and 2 back (where the outside roof rails used to be).
However, since fitting a roof top tent and doing some pretty hectic corrugations and tracks in general, it has cracked the roof at 3 of the 4 mounting points.
Rather than just cut in new roof metal and weld etc to replace where the cracks are, I'd like to mod a stronger solution.

I was thinking of building internal mounts under the headlining so the weight is on the top edge of the body where it's much stronger, rather than directly on the roof.
Or possibly external bars coming up from rear bar and side steps so the weight is on the chassis not the body, but unsure of legalities and also work involved.

Any thoughts or mods you guys have seen that got around this issue?

Cheers!
