Question 4th Gen Stereo Remote & Headphones

When I got my used 03 Sport Edition, it didn't come with the headphones or the remote for the 10 speaker JBL. The previous owner said they were there, but the dealer didn't know anything about them.

Anyaway, I was wondering what people's thoughts are on these. Is the 10 speaker JBL a dual system whereby the back seat can listen to things on headphones that the front isn't?

Is the sound quality any good on the headphones?

Would it be worth the nearly $200+ for the headphones & remote to operate this system?

Thanks!

its NOT worth it! I think you can only listen to am/fm station with the rear seat audio.

you can listen to CD also... if its not OEM I would not bother. I use it sometimes, my toddler likes to put the headphones on and listen to kids music. I get to stay sane an listen to normal music.... but is it worth 200 bucks? NO WAY!

my daughter likes them, you can listen to any source in the back that is not playing in the front or you can listen to the same as the front.

What is the quality of the headphones? My wife & I do a lot of camping, and (unlike my younger years) don't like to disturb the countryside with our music.

I might think about having times that I might just listen, & not disturb her. Or, perhaps there would be times we might get real wild & crazy & both strap on a set - if the sound quality was half-way decent that is!

The sound quality is not bad, but it is not for an audiophile...It helps keep me sane when the kids are in the car as they can listen to their Sesame Street music on tape while I listen to my cd...

I'll try to explain as best I can.

The head phones can listen to either the Radio or CD and control either. If the head unit is on CD and the head phones are on CD, changing the cd or track will affect both. If the head unit is on radio and the head phones are on CD, they do not interfere with each other (IE changing the station doesn't mess with what track on the CD player is playing)

The headphones DO NOT work outside the 4runner. As soon as you leave the inside, there is no signal. I'm speaking about the factory headphones, I don't know about aftermarket ones.

When I bought my truck, it listed the headphones on the sticker. When I took delivery and examined the truck, I could not find the head phones as well as the remote. I went back to my salesman and he wrote a "we owe" note out and took it to the parts guy who ordered it. A few days later I get the phone call that they arrived.

I hardly use it I'll admit, so I probably wouldn't go through the trouble of buying it. It came with the truck so I'll hold onto them...

I think you can purchase any IR wireless headphones, I thought someone here bought a set from Radio Shack for cheap ($20).

Don't waste your time... I bought two sets, used one of them to test it for like 10 minutes...had them for a year now. Now I'm considering taking the thing out and putting a drop down monitor, so they were a wast of money for me.

If they don't work outside the truck, I don't see a lot of use for them then. I had thought they had a range of like 25 feet or sumptin - maybe that's only with clear view of the sending unit.

They only work if you are sitting in the back seat. I tried them in the front passenger seat and all you hear is static. It is good if somebody in the back has a CD they want to listen to and you want to hear the radio. The sound is fairly good. I personally don't see much use for it though. You can't even listen to AM in the back and FM in the front.

Trust me, if you had 2 little kids that only want to listen to Sesame Street songs everywhere they go, you would think that there was some good use for it....

And they do not work in the front seat or outside the rear doors, haven't tried them from the rear compartment though, they may work with a clear line of sight to the sending unit.

The headphones were not provided with the
rear set option, although you do get the remote control.

Some dealers were asking $150 for the headphones
(quoted by Tempe Toyota). They are actually priced much less.

I think this has to be the all time rip off, to sell
and option that can't be used as installed.

I remembered seeing a thread on the siennaclub.org forum about headphones, here's one of the threads that seems to have a lot of links...and prices as low as ~$25 for non-oem headphones that work. the link

Is there a name for the rear system? I don't think that the JBL and rear audio are linked. I'm installing an aftermarket stereo and think I ran into an extra plug for it. I'm fine leaving them detached, but curious if I can use it with some extra wiring..
