Are 03 and 04 Nav Units the Same?

I'm trying to order a replacement headunit for my 03's navigation from partznet.com. The part number they come up with when they look up my VIN is for a 2004 nav unit (part # 86120-35241). I suppose my 03 4Runner could've had an early 04 nav unit installed at the factory, but I just want to make sure that they are the same. Anyone knows?

I'm not sure, but it seems that some 2004s have the '03 navigation head unit. There's one thread where I said 2004s have backup cameras, but a few members said theirs did not and they had the 10 speaker setup, #1 below. There are three different navigation head units for the 4th gen.

1. With tape deck, seperate DVD ECU and 10 speaker JBL Synthesis system.
2. Without the tape deck, all in one unit, with backup camera and 8 speaker system.
3. Like #2, but with a 4-disc changer and Bluetooth.

From my observations, I believe 2003, some 2004s have #1. Some 2004s and 2005 have #2. 2006+ have #3.

Have you tried OEM Value and replacing it with the current nav unit, #3?

No because I have separate headunit display and ecu is in the back. It'll only cost me $500 to replace the headunit. The all-in-one unit costs much more. I did add the backup camera to my headunit as there is a plug-n-play port in the back. From your description of the 3 types of systems, sounds like there's only one style of headunit without the ecu so it should be okay.. Thanks!
