Based on my extensive research on the forums I have concluded the resonator does not affect sound much, if at all, when using the stock muffler. In addition, the resonator will affect sound dramatically when using an aftermarket muffler. All in agreement?

If you install an aftermarket Muffler the resonator will make a big difference in drone. I personally have had the same flow master without the Tundra resonator and with it. No one else claims to have done this, at least that I have read on this forum. It does make a difference, huge difference. You can probably get a used resonator (mine is used) from a scrap yard for $10. The TRD and Borla complete systems come with a resonator ... For a reason.

I'm running a Dynomax VT muffler.

Just had the resonator removed this morning and a tip welded in place. There is a noticeable difference in sound now. I am actually a little surprised how easy it is to tell the difference.

If I had a Magnaflow or Flowmaster or some other obnoxious muffler I would leave the resonator in place to help with drone. But since my Dynomax VT already has drone-killing technology built in I'm pretty happy without the resonator in place. Sounds better.

Just contacted a shop about this mod.

Resonator delete.
Bent (60 or 90) stainless extension to exit behind the tire.
Stainless tip.

Just waiting to hear back from the "exhaust guys" at the shop.

Thanks for all the great info in this thread and sorry for bumping an ancient thread. Will update with photo when I finally get it done.

I just noticed this threat with 80 replies spanned 16 years. Impressive that the info is still here for all to see.
