Question Resonator on the exhaust question....

I have considered the dual exhaust for my 4Runner, but after riding in one with it, it was just a little bit too loud for me. It isn't really that it is loud, but more of a droaning noise. Anyway, knowing that I can't leave well enough alone, i was wondering if anybody had done any type of exhaust work where they had removed the resonator almost at the end of the pipe. It is that last bulge behind the wheel. I have put a tip on the end of the exhaust, but I just don't like the way it sticks straight out the back. I had talked ot the exhaust shop and he said it would be no problem to cut it off and turn it out. I was thinking about putting a tip on it like this cat-back system from magnaflow. I was just curious if any body had heard the V8 exhaust without the resonator, but with the stock muff?

To answer my own question, taking the last resonator off makes very little difference. I had the pipe cut off and turned out with a tip added. I like the look much better than stock and not bothered by a louder exhaust. I will post some pics here shortly.

Here are a couple of shots. Yes, I know my all weekend cleaning is all messed up now, but at least I have several good coats of wax on it.....under all that crud.

closer shot. I am going to get under there and do a little touch-up painting on the joint.

I've been contemplating doing nearly the exact same thing - like they say, great minds think a like. Looks pretty sweet, in my humble opinion!

Exactly how much louder is the modified exhaust compared to before? Without the resonator is the sound any different (as in pitch, as opposed to volume)?

I know it is hard to tell what everybody's idea of loud is, so I will just say I am pretty anal about that stuff and it is minimal. When I first crank it up, there is a very slight difference. Driving around there is no difference at all. I even had them put the resonator in ther back of my truck in case I ws dissapointed and had to have it put back on. I am extremely pleased that it isn't any louder. I say go for it.

Nice looking tips too, good choice!

Did they mandrel bend the pipe? I know it's just a very small section but every little bit helps...

Yep, he cut the resonator off right at the front edge of it. He added a small pipe with the correct bends in it between the old pipe and the tips.

Here is an engine shot, but not a good one. It is raining a little bit here, so the lighting is bad. I will get some better shots after I get back for the Big Easy....

Excellent looking mod. I'm contempating this for my soon to be delivered SR5. What brand/make/model # are the dual tips? Is the original exhaust stainless?

I am not sure what the model number of the tip was. I went to the exhaust place and the had a Magnaflow poster up on the wall and I just pointed to it. You could probably just print out one of the pics and take it up there and they should be able to get it for you, as long as they handle Magnaflow.

You didn't notice much difference in tone? I have a 14" Magnaflow and when I had the resonator taken off and replaced with a new tip, it made all the difference in the world!

Here is what mine looks like: (not as nice as Momo's, but, similar in idea)

That looks good.

I didn't have the muffler replaced. i just had the resonator cut off and the pipe turned out with the tip. I just didn't like the way it was sticking straight out the back.

I can tell a very slight difference, but it isn't noticable to somebody if they haven't been riding in the truck all the time. It is so slight it isn't even really worth mentioning.

ohhhh ... okay ... Yeah, I only had mine removed after I had been driving around with the Magnaflow on for awhile ... and so when I got the resonator removed, I could hear the Magnaflow a lot better and it sounded a great deal more like what it should. But without replacing the muffler, I guess I can see how just removing the resonator wouldn't make a big difference. Nonetheless, the new tip looks great, Momo.
