Hello,

Newbie here. System wouldn't let me start a new thread, so I'm posting here.

I bought a used 2016 4Runner SR5 earlier this year with only 21,000 miles and original Dunlops. It now has 32,000 miles and I am looking to replace the tires with either MICHELIN LTX A/T2 or COOPER DISCOVERER AT3 4S. I like the look and price of the Coopers, but am concerned they might not be made as well and are more likely to give me shimmying headaches.

Any advice?

Thank you.

Same Tire question vs Duratrac

G'Day
I've also narrowed my new tire selection between Cooper Tire AT3 4S but vs. Good Year Duratrac.
Both are on sale for same price and living in northern Canada want to ensure tires will meet colder winter conditions. Any comments or suggestions?

Additional I am too cheap to get a lift so 255/75/R17 (2005-4wd-v6-SE)would be about 39 mm taller than stock 265/65/R17 for additional clearance of 18 mm (about 3/4"). I've read alot of posts on 255/75/R17 are a close, but non-rubbing fit. Any feedback to the contrary?

Many thanks,
Cheapo

Juergensen, there are numerous threads on the LTX on here, have a look at the threads I think you will find all you need to know.

From my experience the LTX are very long lasting and pretty good in just about any condition except mud. Very good on the highway. Even so I have decided on the Coopers for my next tires, the $50-$60 difference per tire is a lot, and if I get 50k out of the Coopers I will be ahead of the game. Not to mention the 3 peak mountain rating.

IF I was still driving 30k miles a year like I used to it would be the LTX. But doing only 10-12k per year they will be only 1/2 worn at 5 years so the extra cost would be wasted.

CheapO, I considered the Duratracs also for my next tire. But I don't go offroad that much and they would be overkill for me. Check out the stickied thread on tire fitment, that should answer your question on rubbing.

I've been running the Cooper AT3's for 6 years/70k miles.

They have given me no reason whatsoever to try another tire.
I adore these tires.
After running BFG KO's for about 10 years prior to these.

If you notice, I have the old AT3's on the back.
And the new AT3 4S on the front.
Worn UCA joints took out the front set prematurely.
All fixed now, and still lovin' the AT3's after 6 years.
Helluva nice tire.

Do you have the standard load, or the C or E rated?

So im torn between the Cooper AT3 4S and the Falken at3w. I do 95% driving on roads and want a good tire with low road noise and decent snow traction.
Im currently running the K02's and though they have been amazing the past 20k miles, lately their wet traction has been horrible.
The Coopers seem like they will be my next buy. Are you guys running this tire still happy with them? Do you find wet/snow performance degrades after a while? Thanks for any input.

Real World Reviews (on a slightly different chasis)

I've also been reading for hours about the Cooper AT3 4S and the Falken AT3W tires. I know these reviews aren't using a 4Runner chasis, but they are by far the most entertaining and real-world that I have seen comparing the popular model of tires that show up here often. This group currently has the AT3 4S as their top rated tire. In order of usefulness for me (there are a lot more videos on tires, so check out their channel):

KO2 vs AT3 4S - Not surprised by the KO2 off-road performance, or what happens on slightly wet pavement conditions
Epic AT3 4S Review - Most entertaining of the bunch
Falken AT3WA Review - Note this is the A model of this tire. Less aggressive pattern than the one usually referenced.

And if you don't have time for videos, here's their current summary chart (but their videos are great):
AT Tire Comparison Chart

Next week I’ll hit the 15,000 mark on my Cooper AT3 LTs. So far nothing but pleased with them. I opted for 235/80/17’s, an E rated tire that only weighs 43lbs! These pizza cutters are just a bit taller than stock but over an inch narrower. I run them at 55psi on the blacktop but do air down to 20psi or so off road as needed. They did great on steep and rocky trails last couple years and winter driving has been a joy. Sure is getting hard to not like this tire.

Cooper description here

I was in line to replace some dry rotted tires on my T4R. My driving is mostly asphalt, city commute and a few maintenance roads a couple times a year while camping. Aggressive and pricey AT tires were out the door, but I didn't want to deal with HT tires again. My main goal was something with more snow bite to deal with the MN winters.

I was always a fan of the original AT3's. Affordable and seemed to have decent reviews throughout, not to mention I've had numerous vehicles with Cooper Tires. We have a set of AT3's on the family's Frontier and are quite pleased with them.

A quick search led me to find the new 4S for only $8.xx over the original AT3s (they went way up in pricing the day I was getting them mounted), and with a $70 rebate, I was pleasantly surprised. A few minutes later, I had a receipt and was waiting on shipping.

$592.14 for stock sized 265/65/17's (paid $138.19/ea before tax after “rollback”, hint hint the store I purchased them from)
$90.50 for mounting fees, lifetime balance and tire insurance
-$70 manufacturers rebate

2 day shipping to the store, 7am apt time, and home with them mounted, white walls out:

Some close ups:

Is been about 100 miles and 3 days, so far they have been great. Way quieter than my previous rubbers. Tracked in the rain with no problems. And they've felt more compliant and soft on the road.

I'll post some pictures next to the original Discoverer AT3s next for comparisons. My readings have led me to believe the 4S are really an AT3+ (play on Iphone modeling). In my size, the 4S are 2lbs heavier per Cooper's data. The sidewall is supposedly a bit thicker and designed to look a bit more aggressive over the original AT3. The tread design looks almost similar by first impressions.

A few Taco guys have seemed to jumped on this tire too. Read here

I'll keep updating as I go. We have a 3 hr drive up to camp coming up with some service road, and then looking forward to winter to test out the snowflake rating.
Curious...how much lift do you have on your 4Runner?

thank you!

Have had 4 sets of Cooper AT3 4S and the last two sets had tires that suffered splits or punctures between lugs. Just had one today on the road from Stevensville, MT to Twin Falls, ID. I moved the spare AT3 4S to the snowflake rim and put a new 10 ply AT3 on the steel spare because the future tires will be all 10 ply LTs.

Well right or wrong I just ordered 4 AT3 4s in 265/70-17 to replace the E-rated GeoDrive tires the Toyota dealer stuck on my 2020 4R that had 30,000 miles on it. I don't know what the original tires were other than P metric with 32psi recommended. I don't need the E tires and don't like the looks or reviews on the GeoDrives so they're gone with less than 1,000 miles on them, tire dealer will give me about 60 bucks each.

I have a 2022 Off Road Premium with KDSS on the way and have purchased a set of TRD Pro rims for another set of tires, which I intend to switch onto it. I’m hoping some of you experienced 4Runner guys will support or shoot down my decision to purchase Cooper AT3 4S tires. I have read exhaustively and come to the conclusion that these tires will best fit my needs. Originally I was going to buy the Nitto Terra Grappler G2s that come on the TRD Pro, then I thought for sure I was going with KO2s. I am buying stock sized 265/70/17s. Mostly on road, but occasional snowy and wet roads here in the northeast and some light towing/light off road. Please agree or disagree with my decision, cost is not a factor, I want the best for my needs. Thanks
