Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S

Pictures and brief description of the new AT3 4S. Will update as the miles accumulate.

These new 4S, along with the LT and XLT were just announced Spring 2018 for the AT3 line up. See here

Cooper description here

I was in line to replace some dry rotted tires on my T4R. My driving is mostly asphalt, city commute and a few maintenance roads a couple times a year while camping. Aggressive and pricey AT tires were out the door, but I didn't want to deal with HT tires again. My main goal was something with more snow bite to deal with the MN winters.

I was always a fan of the original AT3's. Affordable and seemed to have decent reviews throughout, not to mention I've had numerous vehicles with Cooper Tires. We have a set of AT3's on the family's Frontier and are quite pleased with them.

A quick search led me to find the new 4S for only $8.xx over the original AT3s (they went way up in pricing the day I was getting them mounted), and with a $70 rebate, I was pleasantly surprised. A few minutes later, I had a receipt and was waiting on shipping.

$592.14 for stock sized 265/65/17's (paid $138.19/ea before tax after “rollback”, hint hint the store I purchased them from)
$90.50 for mounting fees, lifetime balance and tire insurance
-$70 manufacturers rebate

2 day shipping to the store, 7am apt time, and home with them mounted, white walls out:

Some close ups:

Is been about 100 miles and 3 days, so far they have been great. Way quieter than my previous rubbers. Tracked in the rain with no problems. And they've felt more compliant and soft on the road.

I'll post some pictures next to the original Discoverer AT3s next for comparisons. My readings have led me to believe the 4S are really an AT3+ (play on Iphone modeling). In my size, the 4S are 2lbs heavier per Cooper's data. The sidewall is supposedly a bit thicker and designed to look a bit more aggressive over the original AT3. The tread design looks almost similar by first impressions.

A few Taco guys have seemed to jumped on this tire too. Read here

I'll keep updating as I go. We have a 3 hr drive up to camp coming up with some service road, and then looking forward to winter to test out the snowflake rating.

Just wondering what you meant by this?

These seem more of an evolution of the original AT3 than a whole new tire. I wonder if Cooper is going to drop them with this new line of 4s, LT, and XLT.

Looks great!
That’s gonna be my next tire after I use up the OEMs.

That's probably a fair assessment, note the tread compounds have totally changed though and are actually different for all three designs.

Got these at3s for my 11' & just finished our 3k summer vaca & being a lead-footed old man like to get where I'm going FAST ! Most times we did 80 but sometimes tried 90 & some less than stellar interstates 15,90, 84,82 ,395 . It's is summer so lots of repaving & such . IMO think its a great across the board tire off-road on road manners were fine , not heavily weighted down 600lbs so we got about 330 out of each tank which I think is pretty good at my speeds . Anyway thumbs up on At3s

... The original AT3s? Or one of the new AT3 line of tires? The original were good.

So far I've been enjoying the AT3 4S. On road manners are way better than my previous tires.

I believe that's why it's 3 "different" tires now. P, LT, and 'extra' LT. Lol

AT4S vs AT3

So a few more quick shots. You be the judge:

4S on left, original AT3 on right

Tread block design looks similar, but an extra siphon vane here and there.
Sidewall design has changed.
The "4S" stamping isn't white walled, so unless you're looking for it, you won't notice it.
Also, the corner of the tread is blockier on the 4S vs AT3.

These new Discoverer AT3 models look good. I currently have a set of Cooper Discoverer RTX that came on my T4R that are solid but boring looking.

I'm debating the 4S in 255/75R17 (31.97 diameter, 10 width, and 39 lbs) vs the LT in 265/70R17 (31.57 diameter, 10.6 width, and 47 lbs). 95% of my driving is on pavement, and I'm not sure if the LT is worth the weight penalty. I'm sure the LT is tougher and more aggressive looking, but it's hard to tell a big difference in the side lugs in the pictures.

Why did you decide on the 4S over the LT?

The 4S in P was all I really wanted for my needs, commuting to work, hauling the family. Plus I don't have any weight add ons to need the LT.
