ECU Reset
I'm hopefully receiving my Volant CAI tomorrow and my Borla Exhaust sometime next week. I want to know how to reset my ECU (I know disconnect the negative battery cable... but for how long?) so I can get the ECU trained to the new parts. Hopefully I'll see a better and faster performance/economy gain this way rather than letting the ECU take it's time and doing it all over a course of who knows how long. Besides... I read in problems and warranty that the transmission clunking that most our 4Runners have at low speed might be cured by resetting the ECU.

If you disconnect it before install and reconnect it after you should be fine. Generally though I waited about 5 minutes whenever I reset, but it could be instantaneous for all I know...

TRDSilverBulitt Let me how this go for I too am looking in getting the volant CAI soon. Let me know if you truly notice a gain in power and if the exhaust is very loud. I already have the borla exhaust installed in my truck.

Funny... I just finished the install for the Volant and I'm waiting for my Borla Exhaust to arrive! A few things while my ECU resets and I take it out.
The instructions are pretty vague unless you know how to work on cars or are some sort of engineer so take your time.
There was this weather stripping that was included but not shown on the instruction as to what it was for or where to put it. At first I installed it on the left side (facing the engine) port where the 4Runner's "body intake" meets the air box. But then after securing the box and getting ready to connect the filter and the tube to the throttle body it looked like it fit better for that particular port (the right side). So I removed the box again and relocated the weather stripping. It looked better here because it looks like it actually "centers" the tube into the box and fills in this 1" gap between the tube and box so less crud can get in there.
MAKE SURE THE TUBE IS MOUNTED HIGH ENOUGH! You can do this by pushing up and in with the tube when you tighten the clamps on the silicone tube connector from the intake tube to the throttle body. I checked the fan clearance (luckily) before starting the car and found that merely leaving the tube where it was (snug but not too loose) would've made the fan blades hit the intake tube as they spun. So don't forget... CHECK ALL CONNECTIONS... CHECK ALL CLEARANCES... THEN RECHECK AGAIN!
Now... time to ride! I'll post again after my test run around the hills near my house! Hope this all helps...

Update:
Dangit! Had battery unplugged for 15mins to reset ECU. Plugged it back in. Tried to start. Cranking but will not fire. Now I'm freakin' worried. I'm trying to keep unplugged for 1/2 an hour now. Hopefully she starts this time. All connections seem fine. Hopefully it's not because I have a CA emission system or anything stupid like that. Any suggestions? <Crossing fingers>

Could it be the battery terminal is loose? other than that i don't what else could be wrong if you had all the connections right.. sorry not much help..
Not sure if my K&N is any different but when i installed my intake the engine fired but died after 2 seconds.. i had trouble with my MAF sensor not sitting on the tube the right way though
Let us know how it goes for you.....

Well paint my d*ck red and call it lipstick! Thanks to OUTRNNR (big ups my man!) I FINALLY figured it out!
I don't think anyone on this forum nor on the installation instructions mentions that the MAF sensor had to be mounted BACKWARDS!
I installed it at first with the "notch" facing the throttle body. Little did I know I had to mount it with the notch facing the air box! I had to trim off some of the electrical tape wrapping the ground wire plastic shroud to get some extra slack so I could mount it this way. I would've NEVER figured this out without asking OUTRNNR and looking closely at a previous install pic ( http://www.burtmanindustries.com/ima...ol_4th_gen.jpg). Thank God for the internet!
Thanks again to OUTRNNR for the heads up!
About the intake tho... it sounds AWSOME! I didn't think a CAI with a box could still sound so good. You really hear the less restriction when you're accelerating between 2300-2800rpm. Obviously it's more throatier the wider open the throttle is but even under light acceleration you can still hear the V8 wanting more. I just hope my milage doesn't suffer right away (it will) because I want to hear the intake work.
I'm really relieved though that the sound is what I wanted it to be despite it being an "enclosed" CAI. I have no regrets buying the Volant over the K&N now. Especially the comfort of knowing it's more protected than the "open" style K&N.
Now... I just have to wait for my Borla exhaust to come hopefully next week. Did I mention how much I love tax refund time?
