Pirelli AT Plus review, *****

Sorry no pics just yet, forgot to put them on photobucket which reminds me I am looking for an easier to use hosting site, I used to love PB but not so much now.

I waited to post about the AT Plus until I had some miles on them in various situations and I have to say they are the best AT tire I have ever used. Very quite, very stable, very good in rain, only light snow and a bit of moderate offroad except one snowy and muddy steep 6 ft climb to get back on the road and went right up it. They DO NOT pick up and through rocks into the wheel wells either.

I have modded vehicles for 50 years and have had hundreds of wheels and tires for everything up to all out road racing but never into hard core off roading so my comments are not the source for into about that application.

For my particular needs I went with 18's and 18x9 pretty low weight wheels in an 18 offset to keep them under the fenders though a zero would of been OK but not the best for the suspension geometry. I wanted firmer sidewalls and more support thus the wider wheels in 18 inch diameter which is not the best for more serious off road use, I go over the Sierras in the winter a few times so wanted good grip in the snow and rain but also something pretty sporty and they are pretty darn good at it.

I had the General AT tires in stock size on 7.5 Tundra wheels and was going to get a summer setup and run the Generals in the winter, a bit less than half worn so not the best but I can skip driving in the worst weather as I am retired. I ran into a deal on 26lb 18x9 well made wheels, MB from Discount, 5 wheels for $400 shipped! I decided to get new tires to run all year and sell my Gens with Tundra wheels, a set of 8 hole FJs I just bought and the stock wheels instead. The Generals where very loud on the highway but drove pretty decently.

For someone looking for a great all around tire with low noise, great ride, great grip withing their design parameters, I have to say my vote goes to the AT Plus!

***** stars!

Rick

Note: In the 265/60/18 size they are as wide or wider than most all 285s and fit a wider wheel really well, I have to recommend at least an 8 inch wide wheel for them.

Note 2: I originally bought Nokians on a great sale but they ended up being not round enough to balance right which was a shame because I really liked them other than that issue. It seems the first batch or two had that issue and were sold off to whomever wanted to dump them on the public, lucky for me I was able to get my money back. I believe they fixed the problem, I hope so as they are a good company and a world leader in winter tire design.
