I just bought these tires, haven’t put them on yet though. Can’t wait!!

I figured I’d chime in since this thread helped me pull the trigger on getting the ATX’s after my Cooper AT3’s we’re nearing the end of the road. I’ve had mine installed for about 2500 miles now. I went with the SL’s since it’s a daily driver and most of its time is spent on road.

These tires have seen most conditions now: snow, rain, ice, dry, in town and open highway. (Yet to see off-road mud and rocks)

This is my wife’s ride and her old tires made her feel like she was on skates when it snowed. I figured some of it is her driving and some of it was the tires. So far she’s had 2 good snow days in Denver with the new tires and I’m yet to get a call from her panicked that she’s going to slide off the road. She says they feel a lot better in the snow and icy roads and they are a lot quieter than the old coopers.

I’ve had a chance to put some decent miles during a road trip from Denver to Phoenix over the Thanksgiving weekend where we experienced heavy snow through all of New Mexico on i25 and i40. I’m impressed by how well they did in the harsh conditions. During our trip we saw lots of cars stuck and spun out. We kept it in 4wd and cruised right thru.

Those that have put them on and have a little time with them now, how are you liking them? Likes, dislikes.

I think I've got enough time in on them to give an opinion. 2000km. Been winter here for a few months we've had wet snow, ice and I just got back from a ride in light Blizzard conditions -17C. I never drove a truck before getting the 4runner and these are the only tires I've used.

I certainly feel confident in winter conditions. Vs winter tires I really like a all terrains as a middle ground because I can drift around and not worry about the soft tire compound melting off. It does slide on pure ice eg at stop signs or if I take a corner too fast but I think this is to be expected. These circumstances might have slightly better performance with winter or ice tires but would probably require a similar level of traction. I have been on decent inclines in 4 inch snow and had no problem with traction in 4wd. And in 90 percent of slippery conditions the 4runner takes off like a bat out of hell in 4wd and I have no problem with quick stopping.

They look damn cool. I have them at 33 PSI currently and they have a nice wide body and tread profile that gives it a more aggressive look than the stock tires. White lettering out is ftw.

Mine are p rated. I'm getting bad mileage but assuming that's because I tromp the throttle generally. (?maybe also the lower psi - not sure if someone might comment on that?) I think I made the right decision on P rated with respect to ride quality. Smooth and soft.

Price was definately right. Excited to see how they do in the summer and in muck.

I'll throw my 2 cents in. I've had these for about 5000mi now, and we just had snow, mixed snow, and an ice storm within the past two weeks. These have been fantastic in the snow and ice. The wet traction is great, and I feel confident. Obviously, ice is ice, but the slippage has been minimal.

Can't say I really have any complaints. I've been playing around with tire pressures to see how the mpgs roll. 36-37 usually keeps me around 17.5, plus or minus a couple tenths depending on how my driving goes for the week. Overall, I usually do 60/40 city/highway. Of course, temp, driving style, air pressure (etc.) affect those mpgs, so it isn't super reliable or scientific. But I was ok with the chalk test on them.

In terms of noise, I find the road noise acceptable. It's higher pitched, but it is not nearly as loud as other ATs or MTs that I have heard while on the street.

If you guys have watched the Expedition Overland Series they run General (sponsorship) ATX and X3 on T4R, Tacoma, and Land Cruiser. They have a couple of YouTube videos discussing the tire and the conditions they put them through during their expeditions and it's pretty impressive considering the places and terrain they have gone through. I definitely plan on running these tires once we piece our suspension together on our new 20 TRD ORP.

The experience I have had with these General Grabber ATX tires has easily been the worst I’ve ever had with any tire purchase, and I have bought a lot of tires for a lot of vehicles. With the initial mounting and balancing (on brand new 17” TRD rims), the Toyota dealer that installed them indicated that two were out of round based on road force balancing. I got on the phone with Tire Rack and they sent out two replacements which they said they would road force ahead of sending. I paid up front for the remounting and was reimbursed several weeks later after multiple follow-ups. The tires were still not driving smoothly and showed balancing issues at various speed ranges. I went to a local tire place with a great reputation to get another point of view and paid to get all 4 rebalanced. They showed me on the balancing machine that two of them (one which was already replaced) was out of round due to what they said were belt issues…you could see that the tread of the tire did not spin cleanly and the machine was shaking. Also, they are very familiar with these tires as they sell and install them. The ride was improved but still drove horribly, especially for a significant portion of the highway speed range.

I reached back out to Tire Rack who contacted General. General told Tire Rack they would give me 50% credit toward the two faulty tires (if I bought another 2 tires from them). Tire Rack wouldn’t do anything for me either in terms of a credit toward other tires. I then contacted General and they started with the same 50% offer. I mentioned their warranty and then they offered 100% on the tires if I bought new ones and they inspected and saw an issue. I refused as I was not willing to buy any more tires without guaranteed reimbursement. After further discussion, they offered guaranteed reimbursement upon receipt of tires regardless of inspection, but I had to pay to have them mounted and balanced. They seem to be tolerable now after taking a slightly longer way home from the tire shop.

As far as the performance, we oddly didn’t get any snow accumulation this winter so can’t comment there, but they are great so far over standing water. Emergency braking in the wet (which happened due to someone sitting at an offramp who decided to pull in front of me when I was doing 55-60) was average at best though. Dry handling is as good as can be expected for an aggressive AT tire. Also, they look great, but rub when turned to the right in reverse and occasionally in forward to the left (usually a parking situation), at least with the TRD 17s on my limited…not sure if non-limited stock size 17s do that. I am still not sure how the reviews for this tire on tire rack are so positive, as I can’t be the only one who experienced these quality issues. I never had any quality issues like this with any tire from any other manufacturer in the past, and I have now paid out of pocket for mounting and balancing of 6 tires plus balancing only of another 4, along with an unbelievable amount of time and aggravation over a set of highly rated tires. Going forward, I am going to deal with a reputable tire shop for both purchase and mounting/balancing so that someone will actually stand behind the purchase if there is an issue.

Just to be clear, I am not saying these are horrible tires and glad to hear that most have had good luck. But, I wanted to share my experience with these tires as I would want to know that this was a possibility when searching for tire reviews on this forum.

I bought the General Grabber ATX (stock size) for my '19 SR5 in January 2020, and I've put about 4000 miles on them. I bought the tires through Discount Tire, and they mounted/balanced them, too. My experience with Discount Tire has been great, but I wouldn't recommend these tires.

I've had my ATXs balanced three times, and they won't stay balanced for more than a few weeks. They're either out of round, or they flat-spot overnight. At 60-65 mph the steering wheel shakes, but, after 10-15 miles they smooth out some. Still, my experience with the tires has been lackluster, and I plan to pursue a warranty claim.

Despite the vibrations, the tires do perform better than the stock Duelers, aside from fuel economy. If the tires rode smoothly, I think they'd be outstanding, but that's not the case.

Bummed that you guys had negative experiences after the first 5 pages of this thread have been overall positive as well as a lot of reviews out there. I've been pretty set on giving these tires a try since first coming across this thread. I'm only at around 20k with the stock grandtrek dunlop's but I feel like it's time.

My rig is currently at the body shop and after 3+ weeks without, it would be nice to have it back with new rubber. Toyota is currently running a buy 3 get the 4th for $1 and they have these in stock. Planning on going to my local dealer and pull the trigger. Whatever money I'm saving on the 4th tire I'm assuming I'll spend on installation, balancing, and alignment but its better than nothing so I'll take it.

These will be my first tire of this kind so I'm looking forward to giving my 4runner the aggressive look it deserves. Will be posting pics and thoughts.

General Grabber AT/X - anyone using them?

So I bought a 4Runner a few months ago. Love it. Question I'm dealing with is tires. Or so I think. 2016 SR5 Premium. 55K miles.

When I purchased I noticed the steering wheel had a slight 'shimy.' But they had just put on new tires (Geo Tour 265/170/R17) and thought it might just be that.

Well that hasn't gone away. I have take into tire shop 3 times to get balanced and one time they road tested balanced (I think that's what its called). Each time they did it they said it was out of balance (like .5 I beleive). And these visits were 2-3 weeks in between. I even took to Toyota and they said tires and balance look fine. Shimy happens around 60 mph. Sometimes won't be there for a week or so and sometimes it's bad.

So question is, why would tire be continually out of balance after a couple of weeks? Are these just crappy tires and will cause a shimy in steering wheel?

I'm really at a loss on how to correct this problem. Any insight would be appreciated.

I have a 2018 Toyota 4Runner with just over 6thousand miles on it and my tires are about shot. TheGeneral Grabber ATx info says one shoould get 60k on those tires. Can anyone substuant that statement? The ATx tires look like what I want but I would like some feedback from this group.
