Of course you are right, what can go wrong with an absolute statement?
But, it is a car forum statement and it conveys the message that there is no appreciable difference between Conti Terrain Contact AT and a good street tire.
Sure, you can have a high performance tire, or a high mileage tire, or a high mpg tire, or a high comfort tire. But as an all-rounder, the P-metric Conti AT is an above average street tire in my opinion. It corners and stops great, it makes no noise, and had no impact on mpg that I could discern. It could be a little harsher than a good street tire but I cannot be sure about that on a 4R.
Where you pay the price for that is offroad, where I would not trust the Conti AT to be more puncture resistant than a good street tire. Its advantage is traction on dirt, where it grips much better than most street tires would.
Then again, I also don't think there is any road penalty other than a very mild mpg penalty, for my P-metric Wildpeaks. There is absolutely no noise at 15,500 miles and these tire sees regular work in rocks. Where I would expect the Wildpeak to be inferior to the Conti AT is traction on street after some aging. I would expect the Conti AT to do better once the tire is 8/32nds or less but that is just a gut feeling and not backed by either data or experience.
