NEW Tire: Firestone Destination AT-2 and XT

New tires this month from Firestone.

A/T2 : All Terrain Truck & SUV Tire | Firestone Destination A/T2

X/T : All Terrain Truck & SUV Tire | Firestone Destination X/T

The A/T2 is milder. XT is like BFG KO2 clone. NEITHER have 3-ply sidewall...but XT has sidewall extra rubber to protect from puncture.

From my reading, A/T2 is quiet...XT is louder (as expected).

The XT comes in LT only...and compared with other LT tires, they are significantly lighter in weight! So, that is kinda nice!

Good review and more info on the above tires: Tire Review: Firestone Destination A/T2 and X/T, Bridgestone QuietTrack - Off-Road.com

I wish that Firestone combined the two into ONE tire. For example, it will be great if the A/T2 had those sidewall protectors and come in LT sizes, instead of P-metric.

Aaaaaand another 275/70/17 LR C tire goes bye bye. Need to replace my 275/70 LR C GYSA and was looking at the Destination A/T since it's not too heavy and well reviewed but looks like the AT-2 will replace the A/T.

The X/T comes in a 255/75/17 LR C that weighs 40 lbs and has the snowflake, might have to look into those. The channels looks similar to the GYSA and should give it better wet traction than KO2's

Here is what stands out:

First, the weight: 40 lb for an LT in full 32"? That's on par with Nokian tires. That's great.

Second, a speed rating of T. This is fantastic, most are Q rated, which is a bit ridiculous. The speed rating, moreover, is not bad proxy for overall sidewall strength though that does not necessarily mean more puncture resistance.

Third, I like the water channels and also the center of the tread, which should make for a reasonably quiet tire.

Finally, I don't like the 15/32 starting tread as much as 17-18, but it is on par with Ko2, which also starts at 15. So long as the number is real, and not actually 14, it is fine.

Is this a brand new tire? I cannot see any pictures but one. The shoulder protectors look excellent. Few tires cover the shoulders as well as this one: KO2 and Ultraterrain. Even tires with otherwise very robust shoulder protectors normally leave some gaps that rocks and sticks can exploit: Wildpeak, Ridge Grappler, and Duratrac.

I was pretty set on getting the Firestone ATs. Basically I wanted the most aggressive off-roading tire available that didn't sacrifice fuel economy or on-road noise lol. Anyway, that research pointed me to the Firestone AT. They are rated quite high on www.tirerack.com, at one point as high as 2nd, but have since fallen a bit with the introduction of newer tech tires. Nice to see they've updated it with the AT/2 now. One of these will be my next set once the OEMs wear out.

NEW Tire: Firestone Destination AT-2 and XT

I’ve gotta say...I’m pretty excited about the X/T. I was also pretty much set on the LT version of the AT, but was always tempted to consider something with a little more bite. It’s getting difficult to find a rugged, decently streetable tire without some ridiculous/cheesy looking sidewall design. The X/T looks like it fits the bill at a respectable price point AND tire weight.

I’m definitely intrigued by the x/t in 255/75r17 C Load. If they are really only 40lbs that is crazy light. I feel like they would look better if the side wall continued into the shoulder lugs without that break though. I’m looking forward to seeing some more pics and reviews as people get them.

I went to my local Firestone dealer yesterday to check out the XTs. Still debating on the size I want for my wife’s stock Trail Premium. He has 265/70/17 in stock but I might go for the 275/70/17 which the they weren’t sure is a so yet. Any other sizes I should be looking at?

After being a loyal BFG KO/KO2 guy for decades it’s time for something else. My last sets on my 4th gen 4Runner V8 and Land Cruiser didn’t wear right.

I really hope that they release the XT in a 275/70R17: I would buy a set in a heartbeat. There aren't many options in that size that are under 55 pounds a tire, but the XT's seem to be really light for a E load rated tire.

I would not hold my breath for 275s XTs.

I am actually less excited about these tires than I was earlier on. The tread is a KO2 look alike at which point I can just as well go back to KO2s in LTC and 265 70 at 44-45lb. But the main reason is that the C load KO2 has the same carcass as the D/E load KO2s just one less physical sidewall ply. By contrast, the XT has a 2-ply polyester carcass all around which theoretically makes it more likely to suffer a puncture when running the desert at some speed. In addition, the XT visually promises to be just as bad as the KO2 is supposed to be in rain (I had the KO2s on a Subaru so rain was never an issue but people here do complain a lot about KO2s with over 20-25k in the rain).

In other words, I see where the KO2 is better. I do not see where the XT is better. An E-load XT in 265 weighs about as much as a C load KO2 yet the latter actually is theoretically stronger as it has one extra ply in the carcass. The E load itself is just a load rating that people hope translates into puncture resistance. The KO2s is designed specifically for puncture resistance in addition to weight carrying capacity. Fact vs hope. I am sure the XT is strong enough and I do not fear occasional tire changes but I just don't see what it offers in 265. The 255 75 17 is very compelling but also quite narrow and while that is good for general purpose offroad conditions, as aired down narrow tires have great traction vs aired down wide tires, I would rather have more stability on road and in off camber situations than more traction, which I have never really lacked in this vehicle.

The reason I am contemplating a return to LTs from Ps is not what everyone who "grew up" as a "wheeler" in earlier decades says (but what about the sidewalls???) but rather the ability to air down for comfort with less worry about sidewalls when aired down. And the reason I need more comfort now vs earlier is my suspension change in the rear. The performance of the Eibach 1" spring and Icon 2.0 shocks is exactly what I want but there is an "edge" in the back unless the vehicle is fully loaded and/or the tires deflated (but deflating Ps more than a bit is not a good idea). Now, when I deflate my Wildpeaks to just 29 from 32, the edge is mostly gone but if I am to deflate at all, I would rather just go to 22-23 and I would not do that on P metric tires.

I am curious about the coming Toyo AT III and Maxxis Razr AT. Wonder if they will be released at SEMA. Generally, I now expect my choice to come down to tires I have had (or their predecessors in the case of the Toyo): Toyo AT 3, KO2, Wildpeak. At the end of the day, all three of those have been great for me in one way or another, so I am kinda running out of enthusiasm for experimentation.

They should be announced, but I have heard no timeline. Toyo told me about the AT3 but said no date available and 4Wheeler magazine had a picture of Razr AT recently. The Razr AT looked too aggressive to be a good all-around tire, but I am curious.
