Can you expand on that? Last sentence specifically I don’t quite understand

My main reason for even debating 285’s is that I’ve seen plenty of people around town with 285’s ... and if it helps ... the tires I will be getting are the nitto hybrid ridge grapplers ... they just look so sick ... I’d love to go bigger ... just not willing to drop the cash into it right now

It’s just winter ... and the nitto terra grapplers are about done ... at least for snow ... fine around town

I ran the Ridge Grapplers. Worst tire I have ever had. Driving in rain was like driving on ice. They look great, good in snow, quiet on road, horrible in rain. Anyway, the stock Pro wheels are 7" wide, not even really enough for a 285 The perfect wheel spec is 17x8 with 4.5" back spacing and 0 offset. With that combo, you will have the least possible chance of rubbing. Here's mine lifted 1.5" with 295/70/17 Ridge Grapplers on MX Pro wheels. All I did is a fender liner trim, no body mount chop, no rubbing.

Thanks for the advice! I do get up in the mountains a lot, and motoring up to the ski lifts with friends will be important. This will be my daily driver so on-road performance is more important to me than off-road performance. I try to stay out of any off-road situation that's too extreme, so a larger tire may not be right for me. I've read good things about the Falkens, and with a slightly larger tire, the 275's should give me the improvement I'm looking for off-road as well.

You are asking a very opinionated question to some how convince your self you will be happy.

If you are worried about power personally bought the wrong vehicle to start.

I went with 285's because I didn't want to see the 275's on there and have them look to small. So I went to the biggest possible I knew could fit with minimal cutting. And of course some peoples opinion think 275 are more than big enough.

Best thing you can do it look at the million pics here and just go for it.
Thanks Dillusion, one of my concerns with stock tire size is looking too small after a lift. I figure that 275 cuts the difference between the two and it will look good both with stock suspension and a built suspension. Maybe I should stop thinking short term between no-lift and lift, and just wait until the lift to get the right tire.

Dang that looks good! Happy to see that size tire with minor trimming. This might be enough to convince me to go up in size!

285's

I also have 285 Toyo AT's....(2018 SR5 premium) no BMC, no rub, no fender cutting, no re-gearing. Slight lift in rear with Bilstein 5100 up front.

I would add....if you go 285's, stay cognizant to wheel weight. I have some relatively lighter Fuel Wheels I'm running which work great.....I think the ideal wheel is what Chris has which is the FN FX Pro, they are light and great looking.

I have 285/70/17s and its niiiice! I do get a little rubbing in full lock in reverse, but just don't do that ever!!!

I still think 285 look too small personally but I'm not willing to cut more so I have to live with it.

This post goes into detail on re-gearing. Changing Tire Size or Wheels? Read this first! and states anything larger than 33" will need re-gearing. At 32", the differences will be negligible, making the 275/70/17 a better choice IMO. I've pushed the stock wheels off-road and found their limit. Perhaps I'll do the same with the 32's and then make a decision to upgrade.

If you run 285 in P rate you'll save more weight.
Toyo open country ATs 48# pounds are not as tall as the newly released Firestone Destinations AT2 at 42# pounds with an impressive 13/32. The destinations has much better rain performance and more sipping and I believe it was designed for snow as well. OCs were louder and sat much wider.

I gained an extra 1 mpg by going from the Toyo OC to the FS destinations if that matters but the mpg gain and quicker acceleration was back.

I ran C rated 275 Wildpeaks for a few weeks but I felt the weight, it was horrible entering freeways but they did ride very soft and comfortable. I went on to swap to 285 P rated Wildpeaks for mpg recovery and they were great but I had to do a road hazard after I drove home with a bent steering knuckle from the off-road park 4 hours away from home. Then came the toyos OCs and now Fs Destinations AT2 which I'll have the opportunity to try at the offroad park soon.

As stated before lighter wheels would help greatly, some FN or SCS wheels at 22# would be ideal.

Do what you feel what is right for you and your budget, it'll all change up again sooner or later. Go make some good friends at discount tire and firestone, bring them some beer, that's how I was able to play dressing room with all my tire options and not spend much at all for their services and favors. That looks SICK man! Do the TRD center caps fit on those wheels?

Thank you. No they do not. I ordered matte black TRD stickers to put on the caps that these wheels come with just for a little contrast. These wheels are designed after the TRD wheel but they are an improvement over the OEM specs.

Alright I went with 32s. 275/70/17 Falken Wildpeak AT3W in C load. It checked all the boxes for me. C is the right balance for me between off-road and on-road durability and comfort. Great snow rating, good in rain and sand, good reviews, consumer reports recommended, and at the right price.
