Since we had the stereo installed, it sounds like the sound quality is actually worse

Is it possible the installer missed something? I mean its not a train wreck, but its definitely more "muddy" or something, if that makes sense. Has anyone ever dealt with this before? Is this Sony unit just not great? Would it make sense that the sound quality with the stock head unit is better?

Would love to hear any input.

Thx!
So depending on how it is wired, there can be serious issues when converting from the JBL amp. A good install should use the low-power RCA outputs to feed the JBL AMP, which would allow the JBL amp to still power the speakers exactly as it did from the factory unit. You can try playing with the bass/treble settings. On my 3rd Gen Limited I put in Pioneer unit with HPF set at 50hz. It just knocks out the deepest bass, but you still get the full sound without the muddiness. The stock headunit cuts off around 35hz I believe.

I've never had any luck with the android head-units, they have all ended up sounding bad.

The JBL amp is expecting a digital signal from the head. You'll need a Toy/JBL system specific adapter to convert from either the preamp or speaker level outputs into a digital signal the JBL amp understands. There are/were a couple of different options on the market...check Cruthchfield for details.

Assuming your installer actually used one of these adapters, they still have some very specific steps that need to be done before the factory JBL head is removed. All of the bass/treble/surround/volume is actually set in the JBL amp, so the adapter instructions tell you to set bass/mid/treble to 0, turn the volume to or at least near maximum (don't know how high it goes), and surround is just a preference....before you remove the factory head unit.

If the installer didn't do one or all of the prep steps, your muddiness could be too much EQ...whatever tone adjustments you're doing in the Sony are running on top of whatever bass/mid/treble settings were left in the JBL before removal.

Similarly, at least one of the adapters had some level adjustment ability to help match the drive level of the aftermarket unit to the sensitivity of the JBL amp. If not done correctly, bad sound could happen.

The other option is your installer tried to bypass the JBL amp and run the speakers directly from the Sony's internal amp. This could cause all kinds of bad due to impedance mismatches and misconfigured crossover settings...the various channels of the JBL amp do some crossover and EQ of the signal depending on which speaker channel its feeding (FD/RD/Sub/Center Front/Center Back).

So, to do any troubleshooting, you need to know exactly how your installer integrated the Sony with the JBL amp.

Good luck!
