“No spring compressor method” in the rear

Hello! I’m looking at doing the “no spring compressor method” to adjust my Bilstein 5100 height. I’ve found a ton of info on using this method for front suspension, but no mention of how to do it in the rear (hehe, do it in the rear). Can this method be used for rear suspension? I have a 2003 limited (air suspension and xreas have already been deleted). Thanks!

A spring compressor not needed for rear because the shock and spring do not go together as an assembly. To replace the springs leave the shocks off and push up on the opposite side of the axle to lower the other side enough to get the old spring out and new spring in and then vice-versa. Then install your new shocks.

Exactly how I did it. If you're doing it yourself, a floor jack to lift the opposite side will drop it down perfectly. Stock springs will nearly fall out. Lift springs can be installed with a bit of a push without much extra effort.

Oh yeah! Duh, of course they're separate units in the rear. I guess I should have looked at it before asking the question eh? Thank you both!

***Note*** - It is highly recommended that this system be installed by a professional technician with the appropriate tools and equipment to properly and safely perform the installation. If you feel that you do not have the tools, equipment, and knowledge to properly install these components, do not attempt the installation, please see a professional 4x4 repair facility.

It is highly recommended that a factory Toyota service manual for your year make and model be utilized and referenced during installation. Procedures and values can and will change from year to year and it is the installers responsibility to verify these procedures and values.
If working without a shop hoist, support vehicle with suitable safety jack stands.
1. Block/chock both sides of the front wheels, both in front and behind the tire to prevent vehicle movement.

2. Loosen, but do not remove the wheel lug nuts.

3. Utilizing an adequate floor jack, raise the rear end up at the center of the axle and secure the vehicle on suitable large jack stands from the frame on both sides, at the furthest to the rear most portion of the frame.

4. Remove both rear wheels/tires.

5. Supporting the rear axle with a jack at the center, just enough to take a slight load off:

6. Remove the rear sway bar.

7. Disconnect the Trac Bar at the axle.

8. Remove the rear shock absorbers. If new shocks are being installed, discard the old shocks. remove old shocks completely. Lower the jack enough to allow the rear axle to drop down as far as needed to relieve pressure on the coil springs for removal.

9. Remove the stock coils springs and separate the spring from the spring isolator/ bump stop. NOTE: you may need to pry with a pry bar to get the springs out. Remove the coil spring isolator/bump stop.

10. Reinstall the factory spring isolator / bump stop onto the new coil springs. Install the new coil springs into the factory frame pocket and the onto the top of the axle. You may need to push up on the opposite axle side to help initiate droop to install the springs. A spring compressor is also helpful depending on the spring being installed.

11. Raise up the axle while watching the springs making sure that everything is properly aligned. Do not lift more than required, you do not want to lift the vehicle off of the jack stands. Make sure that the spring end is properly seated in the spring seat on the axle.

12. Install the new, extended length shocks, do not tighten the lower mounts at the axle..

13. Re-install the rear sway bar, do not tighten the pivots at this time .

14. Reinstall the wheels and lower the vehicle down.

15. Re-install the rear Trac Bar, you may need to jounce the vehicle up and down and / or use a floor jack to help align the Trac Bar, do not tighten at this time.

16. Torque the rear wheels to specification.

17. At ride height (weight of the vehicle on the ground) torque the lower shock bolts, sway bar bolts, and Trac Bar to factory specifications. Double check ALL factory rear bolts to factory specification before vehicle operation.
Some Final Notes
After installation is complete, double check that all nuts and bolts are tight. If new tires are installed that are more then 10% taller than original tires, the speedometer must be recalibrated for the vehicle systems to function properly. Contact an Authorized Toyota dealer for details on recalibration.

Have headlights readjusted to proper setting.

Realign front end to factory specifications. Be sure vehicle is at desired ride height prior to realignment.
Re-Check Torque of all components after the first 100 miles, then 500 miles of operation and then during regular service intervals thereafter.
