i think i want a magnuson supercharger, but questions

ive been looking at magnuson and also procharger. it seems like magnuson would be a better fit for me. i have a few questions. i already have a TRD CAI and a Magnaflow catback exhaust. would i need to remove those and put the stock parts back on? i was also thinking about buying a pedal commander. would the magnuson flash that i get make the pedal commander pointless?

No need to remove the exhaust will still be fine. The CAI -possible, all depends on how it hooks up and where it sits in relation to the new blower. As far as the pedal commander....I would remove that before installing.
Your throttle response and power delivery will be different with the blower and you will have to get used to that

The pedal commander reduces the delay between the accelerator pedal position and the throttle position. You can use both at once but it could make the throttle touchy. The 5th Gens are pretty lethargic when it comes to acceleration though so it's not like adding a supercharger plus pedal commander will make it undrivable.

Magnuson

I have modified the TRD CAI to work with a safari snorkel(which was existing) and I have the pedal commander also pre existing. SO I will update this thread as soon as I start test driving. Just finished install Yesterday.

I don’t see it being and issue having both. I had a comptech blower on my civic si and a pedal commander. Worked great.

I will probably get roasted for this, but I have the pedal commander and the Magnuson. When towing, or driving around town, I actually prefer the Eco mode as it makes me behave myself. You still get all the power, but you have to really mash the pedal to get it. The city and sport modes plus the supercharger actually feels like too much in my personal opinion when daily driving, especially with constant stop and starts.

I have the T10 headunit and run the Pedal Commander app on that when I want to make changes.

So I have a question on this…. I have a 2019 T4R SR5 Premium with 31k on it. It’s been in the desert it’s whole life but I am trying to get it like my old Tahoe was (lift, tires, etc).

I miss the overall power that my V8 had versus this V6, which is weird cause it gets like the same gas mileage…

Anyway, I digress…

I called a “performance place” in Las Vegas, where I live, and asked if they install this super charger on my T4R. They asked how many miles, I told them and they said, “No because Magnuson doesn’t recommend them to be installed once the vehicle gets past 18k miles.”

I asked, “Why? Would you still do it if I bought it and brought it to you?”

They responded that they had no idea why, call magnuson and No that they would not install it if I bought and brought it to them because Magnuson say they don’t recommend it being installed in a T4R after 18k miles are on it.

Anyone care to enlighten me on this? If they put one on past that? How it’s running? Issues since install? Etc…

I’m going to look at Magnuson’s website and see if I can see this “recommendation” in the meantime…

I installed mine at 93,000. I now have 130,000 miles on my 4Runner with no issues. I’m not sure why the “performance place” told you that information.

I installed mine last week. It is awesome! As the computer learns it is getting even better. When you fill out your form on Magnuson for the Tune there are fields to fill out on what options and aftermarket stuff you have installed.

I recommend taking Pedal Commander Off, at least for a few months after install, the pedal commander costs hundreds, the SC cost many thousands. I do not think you will need any CAI, the SC comes with a cooling system. I guess it might help, it also probably wont hurt, but I would do whatever Magnuson says.

If you do the install yourself, make sure you have a Pulley Install/Uninstall tool or some way to hold the crank pulley properly - once you install the SC crank pulley add-on you will have to tighten the new bolt to 204 ft-lbs! I went old school with maximum effort but I'm a stubbron sob.

Apparently the SC really likes gasoline, who'd thunk! I'll report back later on MPG once I stop acting like a teenager. The power is there, Magnuson knows what their doing. You will really notice it after a few days.

Also, the new Tune seems to have some sportiness to it but, that might just be the "I can run faster in new sneakers effect". Magnuson encrypts their Tune so I do not know the details of what excatly they did. I am thinking of asking if they can combine some of the Tune features from VFTuner into the Magnuson tune, if not already done.

Mine took 2.5 (10-hour) days total to install including updating the tune, testing and test drives. I did it solo and was careful and methodical. I did not use any power tools except an impact wrench for the removing the crank pulley bolt.

Make sure you have a pulley holder for installing the SC pulley on the OEM crank pulley, I did not have a pulley holder/install tool and had to go old school with maximum effort - the torque spec on that bolt is 204 ft-lbs. I strongly recommend buying a pulley tool!


Make sure you have: a good set of metric tools; a 4mm/5mm or 3/16" socket (for stud removal); Pulley tool for Toyota V6 engines (on Amazon); torque wrenches (10 in-lbs thru 220 ft-lbs); a laptop (a crappy old one will work fine); heat gun/small torch; magnetic pick-up tool; some extra 10mm, 12mm and 14mm nuts; and patience!

I also replaced the Orange plenum gasket on top of the Intake you see in the photos, Magnuson says to probably re-use it, it's dirt cheap so I bought one before starting and replaced it. If you ever break a gasket, oring, seal, etc, just go ahead and replace it.

One last thing, if you are mechanically inclined I'd say do it yourself. You will learn a ton about your engine which is always helpful down the road.

I am an engineer, I build complex machines for a living and I grew up working on vheicles - my grandpa was the senior engineer at two GM plants in the 50's, 60's and 70's. Having said that, you are not breaking any major gaskets, youre not doing valve work, not removing the head, you aint dropping a gear box, etc. This is something you can do yourself.

I've seen other posts of people wanting to do other stuff while they do the install or already thinking about modifying the Tune from Magnuson or swapping out pulleys - dont! Magnuson knows what they are doing and they work with Toyota directly. Do one mod at a time. Ask Magnuson or Toyota before modifying the SC system.

The 4Runner is a very well engineered vehicle and Magnuson makes SC's for Toyota. This SC was specifically made to work as a long term bolt-on upgrade for the 4R's, it was thoroughly tested and has a great track record. It's not a race car and never will be.

I live at a higher elevation and go out in even higher elevations - thats why I wanted the SC. I have a 9 month old '22 ORP built in Ocotber of '21.

Do the supercharger, see what it feels like and if you have issues then try the commander. The big step is the supercharger. I found I did not need anything else as tire traction is the biggest issue after the mod.
